Standardized Testing

This week is ISASP week which means lots of testing. High school students in general don’t like these tests, and they can cause lots of stress and mental problems. But the real question is do these tests that we take every spring even affect us? Do we, as the students, really need to take these tests to see how well we are learning?

Both sides of this argument for and against standardized testing have lots to say. First let's look at for standardized testing. Lots of people say that standardized testing helps students and teachers. This can help teachers by telling them what they need to do better next year for teaching. With students, this can tell them what classes they might have struggled in. Another way they could help students is they can see how they learn the best and from whom. Students can see where their strengths and weaknesses are in school and how to work with and around those to excel in academics.

But on the other hand, these tests that take at least an hour or more for most students and can cause lots of stress and might not even give adequate data. When taking these tests, students can possibly get anxious or stressed because they put a lot of pressure on themselves to do well. They can have test anxiety  and this can make the data skewed, which would mean that there is no point in even taking them. Because we aren’t given good data this would mean that every year they aren’t teaching the right things to students.

In my opinion we should have some sort of testing but not standardized tests. I believe that they don’t do much for our education and there are other ways that students can get adequate data to better their learning experience. Such as: giving sample questions, this way students don’t have to take hour long tests. This would give better results and data for the states to teach us better. Another way could be just looking at students grades throughout the year.

Questions:

Do you think that these tests help us learn better?

Would you rather take sample tests or standardized test?

Do you think that your ISASP score reflects how well you are learning?

    • I think that that is a good point. Sometimes you make mistakes on the test and that means for a whole year you aren't going to be challeged at what you feel you should be. But by saying something versus taking a test you were able to be put into a class more fit for you.

  • I think that standardized tests don't benefit the students as much as the school. I think this becasue we have already proved that we know the topic through the previous assignments and tests. It benefits the school more due to funding and showing that they have taught the subject.

    • I think that the tests are supposed to benefit the students because the data they get from them is supposed to change how the teachers teach. But the school gets so much help if the current standings of our academics are so good.

  • I don't think that standardized tests say much about how effective your learning was or how smart you are. Some people might have understood the topic but then they stress out during the test and make mistakes. I can understand that there need to be some kind of testing to compare student's knowledge.

    • I don't think they see how smart you are either. You can be the smartest person alive but if you struggle when it comes to tests your ISASP score may not reflect how smart you really are in school. Everyone makes mistakes and those mistakes may make you look like you aren't smart.

  • No, I do no think these test help with anything at all. I think there stupid. Because, most kids dont try on them to make our school look bad. I think we could learn so much more that whole week we have ISASP. I kinda like the week though becuase it gives everyone a break from doing test that actually matter.

    • I would rather not take them as well because I feel that they don't really help students that much. I believe that some kids don't try on them as well and this can make our school look bad. In this week of school we could learn so much more.

  • I do not think these tests help us learn better as they are not teaching us and just testing our knowledge. I would rather take sample tests. I do not think that ISAPS score reflects on how we are learning because most kids get burnt out of taking so many long test and don't try.

    • I don't think that ISASP teach us at all. Their primary goal is to see what knowledge that we do and don't know. And with that data they give to the teachers, they are supposed to look over how they will teach for the next year to come.

  • I dont think these test are neccessary. They dont really matter to anyone unless they are a really big nerd and want all those scolorships that dont even help you. it just gives a lot of kids stress and makes everyone crabby especially with all the rules
