Should women be required to register for Selective Services?

On September 16, 1940, the United States instituted the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, which required all men between the ages of 21 and 45 to register for the draft. When it comes to the topic of being drafted and those who are required to register, the point of whether women should be required to or not is usually brought up. I think that women should be able to be drafted. Over the years, women have proven that some women are just as capable as men. I think that equal rights come with equal responsibility.

One of the reasons I think that people think they should be required to register is the fact that the number of volunteer women is increasing anyways. Some believe that if the number is increasing anyways, why wouldn't we just require them just in case? Others feel that if women have the same rights as men, then they should be held to the same standards as men. They should be forced to fight the same way men are.

On the other hand, other people are not for making women register. Some believe that women are more important behind the scenes with smaller jobs than they are in the field. Some say that women are better use helping doctors, making food, making guns, and more. They also feel that if women and men both have the chance to be drafted, that could soon lead to more foster children due to the chance of both parents dying now.

Overall I think that they should be held to the same responsibilities and should have to register for the draft.

Do you think women should be required to register for the draft?

  • I agree with what you said I think that women should have to register for the draft because in today’s world equality is a big thing. Especially when it comes to serving in the army. Some people believe that women shouldn’t serve others believe that it is okay. So the draft, in my opinion, should be okay. You can have your own opinion about it and believe what you want to believe but at the end of the day, we just will disagree with each other no need for an argument.

  • I agree that women should be required to register. Like you said they have proven that they can do just as much as men. What would happen to pregnant women if they were drafted? I could also see some women getting pregnant in a time of war so they have an excuse or exemption from being drafted to war.

  • I think that in today's world, women should have to register for the draft. We already have women serving in the military. Also, the roles of women have changed over the last decades. Rights are more equal between the genders now, so I think that women should have to register for the draft.

    • I completley agree with you beacuse some women are pushing the fact that they are stronger and better than men, so if they are then they should be required to sign up for the draft.

  • I think women should have to as they are also able to serve in combat roles. With that, I think they should also be able to get drafted if met certain requirements. Maybe not have the same rules or requirements as men have but yes I think they should have to register.

  • Back in the 1940s, the role of men and women were much different. Women were supposed to take care of the children and household. Nowadays, there is much more equality. I think that women and men can be capable of the same things and that gender shouldn't play a big role. So, yes, I also think that women should be required to register for selective services. Nevertheless, I think that you still have to keep in mind which impact the person who is drafted has on their family and what happens when they are gone.

  • I agree with you, I think they should have the same responsibilities, so they should have to resgister for the draft.  I think that there are good reasons for woman to not have to register, just like them being better behind scences with smaller jobs. But, I don't think everyone would think it is fair for only men to register.

    • I agree with you, and i guess i am one of those that dont think its fair. Now women have been pushing that they are strong and better than men, not all women though. So I feel that they should have the same responibilities to be required to sign up for the draft.

  • During the 1940s, times were very different and women were seen as someone who needs to stay at home or in the kitche. Men, however, were seen as much stronger and more able to fight and protect our country. Today, the likelihood of someone, even a man, getting drafted is very low because of the amount of people who volunteer. I think that it'd be fine if women were also required to register for the draft, but they already volunteer so it really wouldn't make a difference.
