Should the drinking age be lowered?

The drinking age is 18 in 65% of the world. The lowest drinking age in the world is 15, but some countries don’t even have a limit. There are many pros and cons to lowering the drinking age. In the U.S there are some state-by-state expectations like consumption at home, under adult supervision, and medical necessity. In the United States, the legal majority for almost everything else is 18. For example, the voting age, enrolling in the military, and you can get married or signing almost any legal document without a parents consent when you turn 18.

By the time 60% of people are 18 they would have had at least one alcoholic drink. That shows that most people already drink alcohol. I think that part of so many underage people drinking is the thrill of breaking the law. If we lowered the drinking age then it could solve many more problems. People tend to use fake I.Ds and can get in more trouble because they are doing more illegal stuff.

I think the drinking age should be lowered. I think it will help stop someone from drinking and driving accidents, I say this because if you are allowed to drink then you can stay wherever you are drinking whereas if you are underage then you would have to drive home or leave before anything happens. If you are allowed to get drafted into the military, you should be able to decide what you put in your body. One of the biggest reasons was that kids would show up to school drunk, I think that if a student comes to school with alcohol in them then they could get a public intoxication and should be sent home.

Do you think that the drinking age should be lowered?

If so what age do you think it should be lowered to?

Why do you think the drinking age should be lowered/stay the same?

  • I personally think that the drinking age should and should not be lowered. there is many reasons for both. if it did get lowered high schoolers would be drinking and getting drunk and could be drunk while driving and mess a lot up. it would be easier to become an alcoholic at 18. the reasons why it should is because your going to war at 18 you should be able to drink at 18 because your going to fight and possibly die and not even be able to drink.

    • I agree, there are many pros and cons.

  • I believe that the drink age should be lowered because of many things. I believe this because you would have high schooler drinking when they have sports schoolorships and they get pulled over for driving while drunk thats gonna be gone and they wont get to keep doing what they like.

    • I agree, you don't want to get pulled over when your drunk.

  • I think that the drinking age should be lowered, mainly because everything else that is big happens when your 18 - you are legally an adult, you can vote, you can join the military, you can sign anything, etc. I think that because teens drink already, and they don't listen to the law, it really doesn't matter if the law is there or not. A lot of people would argue that - yes , teens  make terrible decisions, even worse when they are drunk- but do adults. There are just as many adults who get DUIs, had to go to jail, or other legal prolems when they are drunk too.

    • I agree, if you are legally an adult you should be able to drink and decide what you put in your body.

  • Oh for sure I think it should be lowered. I believe it should be lowered becuase it used to be 18, and 18 is technically an adult so you should be able to make adult decisions. Drinking responcibly. Just like when your 21 and you drink and drive you lose your liscense. I feel like 18 year olds should be able to drink responcibly. If your in the military you shpuld be able to smoke drink or whatever because your fighting for the country. Who cares if your smoking or drinking in the army you fighting. And realistically people even under 18 smoke and drink so mine as well make it legal cause nobody is going to quit just because its a law. nobody really cares.

    • I agree, if you are old enough to go into the military you should be able to drink.

  • I think that it should be lowered. if you are able to join the military and vote then you should be able to drink. in the end, though it's not up to us the states have free will to lower the drinking age. but the government would deny funding to the roads. so yeah I feel like they should but they won't because we need the money.

    • Yes, if you can vote and join the military you should be able to drink.
