Should teens have to wear seatbelts?

Having to wear seatbelts hasn’t always been a law. It wasn’t until 1959 when Congress passed a law requiring that all cars must have something for safety. Lap belts were what people would usually choose but in accidents you had the potential to cause separation of the lumbar vertebrae. By 1965 all states had laws to require seat belts in vehicles.

The seatbelt design that is used today was created by a Swedish engineer Nils Bohlin in 1959. People's opinions opposed to seatbelts claims that “As long as the life risked is his own, I believe the individual should decide whether or not to use safety belts is wise.” Ralph Nader published his best selling book in 1965 ‘Unsafe at any Speed’. A decade later nearly 40,000 people died in the US from car accidents.

“Ineffective, inconvenient and uncomfortable” are the thoughts of drivers that participated in a survey in 1985. People would go as far as cutting the seatbelts out. In my opinion I think for the people's safety and yours in the car you should wear one. If you are alone in your car I guess it’s really up to you but I still think it’s a good thing to have a law on seat belts.

Do you think we should be required to wear seatbelts?

Do you think that teans should have to wear seatbelts in the back like adults?

  • Yes, I think everyone should wear seatbelts they are there for a reason and that reason is to protect us from more harm. they might not be the most comfortable but they keep you safe so suck it up and wear one unless you want to get hurt worse in a car accident.

  • I do think that seat belts shoud be required for everybody because they keep you safe. I understand that they aren't always the most comfortable, but it doesn't matter because they keep you from flying out of the car in an accident, so they should be required.

  • I believe that seat belts should be required even if they are not very comfortable. I think they help a lot and make it safer for the driver and for the people in the car too. I believe that teenagers should have to wear seatbelts as well as younger kids and adults.

  • I think that seat belts are good, and I am glad they are required. Everyone thinks they are annoying, but they most definitely help when you get in a crash or something. I think that maybe in the back you shouldn't have to wear them, unless you are in the middle seat, then you need to because you could fly through the front window.

    • Yes I agree even though they can get in the way sometimes they can get annoying and uncomfortable but you can get little pads to go around them and make them more comfy.

  • i think seat belts are a big thing and people dont realize how safe they are until something bad happens. I dont think its such a big deal if you are behind the driver or passenger but in the middle and front seats you should wear them

  • Personally, I don't think seatbelts should be required. Millions of teens already don't because "they aren't comfortable", or, "they feel awkward". Now in the backseat, yes I think it should be required. If someone is in a car crash in the front, there's an airbag. Whereas in the back, It's just BANG! Hope you have insurance to fix your nose!

    • I agree but I disagree with if you are in the front seat. What if the airbag doesnt go off. What if you move over to the side and you end up hurting your passenger because you decided not to wear a seatbelt.
