Should teachers be allowed to hit students?

In the 19th and 20th centuries, teachers used corporal punishments on students. They believed that these punishments helped motivate students to perform better both academically and behaviorally. It was allowed for teachers to discipline students if they weren't paying attention, weren’t behaving adequately, or had inappropriate language. Teachers would typically use rulers, belts, an open hand, etc. Even though it doesn't happen as much as it used to, physical discipline is still legal in nineteen states.

Nineteen out of the fifty states still allow teachers to discipline students in public schools. While in private schools, only two states allow that, Iowa and New Jersey. Many people believe that corporal punishments should not be allowed in a school environment. They think that it is the parent’s responsibility to physically punish the child (if they choose to do so). However, some people believe that corporal punishments are beneficial and useful in school. It is said to establish boundaries, motivate students to behave, and accurately be held accountable.

I think that corporal punishments in schools should be illegal and banned in all 50 states. It is not the teacher’s responsibility or right to lay their hands on another person's child. If a student is really acting up, the teacher needs to contact the parents before taking any physical action.

What do you think about teachers hitting their students?

Do you think hitting students should be illegal?

Who do you think should be in charge of discipling students, teachers or parents?

    • I agree, violence is never the answer to a problem, especially when the violence is against a student. The student doesn't learn from being physically hurt, they only develop trauma and hate towards the teacher.

  • I think that teachers shouldn't be able to hit other students because its not right at all and its weird to do it in a place that is for learning. I also think that teachers hitting students should be illegal becuase it isn't right to have a teacher hit a child that isn't theirs. I feel that the parent should be in charge of their child becuase it's their responsibility.

  • Personally, I think that this could be used as a scare technique. Instead of actually doing it you will scare the students into thinking that you might. But I think that hands-on student abuse would not look good for a school district, and this will not be a common thing. I do not think it is right, but with the right advertisement it may keep students in line.

    • I agree, teachers should never put their hands on a student. If it comes to a point where the student is continuously not behaving correctly, they should be able to intimidate the student to act better. This would get the students to behave better, without the physical pain.

  • I dont think that teachers should be able to hit student because there are many other punishments that work.  I think that if the student does something wrong they shuold have a detention or suspension but never hitting them. That is up to the parents and how they choose to punish them.

    • I agree, the parent has the ultimate authority in regards to dicsiplining their child. There are many other alternatives to physically hitting the student.

  • I do not think that teachers should be able to hit students. I think that if kids need punishment then dentention or ISS or whatever they need. But hitting a student might start even bigger problems, because if a teacher can hit a student the student then might think they can hit a teacher.

  • I do not think teachers should be able to hit students. It is very weird first of all and I think a punishment like a detention or other punishments is better. Hittin students might not always be the best option. The parents might not like it either then everything just goes downhill.

  • I definetly don't think that it is not the teacher's place to hit students, and I think that they should rather be disiplining them in realistic ways, like detention or more school related punishments. I think that hitting students should be illegal, and that parents should be the ones deciding how their kids are punished.

    • I agree, there are many other ways to punish a student. The teachers have many resources to punishments, like detention, the principal, etc., so they should not resort to hitting.
