Should students have to take a foreign language class?

The debate between students having to take a foreign language class has been going on for long periods of time. Now that there are more classes and activities you can take, do we really need a foreign language one?

There are many benefits coming from taking this class, For example you could put it on a job application to use it towards college. It can help students achieve more in school. Learning a second language also helps the brain focus better and can help you in different departments. It also gives you an opportunity to see how other native people talk and communicate with their peers vs how we do with ours.

However, there are a few downsides to taking a foreign language class. It might be too difficult for your brain to understand, causing more stress on you and your schoolwork. The homework or studying could take time out of your day to focus on other bigger opportunities, it could not be needed in your future, or you could simply just lose motivation to do it midway through and fail the class overall.

If I had to choose between taking a foregion language class or not I would choose taking one. Then you would have it to put on your applications and it could help you in situations you might not expect. It would also give you an opportunity to make friends with your peers and branch you into hobbies.

Would you take a foreign language class?

Do you think it should be mandatory?

  • Great topic choice Audrey! Your summary is good but perhaps a tad brief. Be sure to comment back more frequently as well.

  • I think that it should be required to take a foreign language class. Having a class for other languages helps students in to be able to have basic. conversations with people who can't sleek English. Being able to communicate in multiple languages can be very useful when applying for jobs in the future. I am in Spanish class and learning another language on my own.

  • I think that it should be required for students to take a minimum of two years in a foreign language. I would personally take foreign language class, and I'm currently in my second year of spanish. Over all, I do think schools should require students to take at least two years of a foreign language because it can benefit themselves and their future.

  • I personally do believe that it should be required for highschool students to take two or more years of a foreign language. The main arguement is that many of the jobs students want to go into do not require you to know a second language, but I think that this ideology is extremely flawed. You will 100% encounter and have to communicate with someone that speaks another language.

  • I think that foreign language class should only be required for 2 years. I personally am in a foreign language class, and even if you know what your going to do when your older this skill would be helpful. Such as, if your career you want to do and are set on does not work then you will have this skill to help get a different one.

  • I don't think kids should have to take foreign language class. Some of us have our minds made up from the start what we are going to do. It does not require foreign language to farm, etc. There is no reason to waste countless hours of time learning something the majority of us will never use.

  • I think it should be required because of the places you will work and places you be at. You could help them out. But I also think schools should have it required for two years and not four. I personally dont think it is that important but its good learning that we have.

  • I feel like the school should atleast require 2 years of foreign languege that gives you enough that you can kind of understand it and it doesn't push it. I feel like 2 years is an appropriate amount of time for a foreign languege

  • Personally, I would, and do, take a foreign language class. I believe that it is actually one of the more helpful classes that are mandatory. For example, you may not have a job that involves science to the degree that school makes you learn, but in your daily life, you will probably come across a person who speaks another language. Being bilingual or close to it could be helpful to you with other native speakers and could possibly get you out of a situation when you need help. Even though I believe this, I don't think it should be mandatory for people who are struggling. Forcing students to take a class when it is almost impossible for them could lower their gpa and create stress.

  • If two years of foreign language were not required I would not be enrolled in a foreign language class.  I don't think that I will need it where im going with my life.  I want do something in the ag industry and I don't think that I will need it.  I don't think that it should be mandatory.
