When entering your school, what is the first thing you have to do? Well I know for most of the students at HCHS they go to their classes, use the restrooms, or eat breakfast. But that may not be the case for all kids in public school.

A wide range of children have to go through security before entering their schools. Some schools believe that this keeps their students and their staff much safer. But how much time is this exactly taking out of the students learning time? Schools that have their students go through security have each of their students spend an average of 10 minuties each going through security. This takes up 10 minutes of each students time that they could have spent, using the restrooms, asking teachers for help with homework, or eating breakfast, this can cause the students to also be late for class if they show up 5 minutes early for school.

But doesn't this mean the school is safer? This does make the school some what safer. It can detect any type of dangerous object that someone might want to bring into the school. This lowers school shootings and school threats, causing less worry for the students. Student's may be agaisnt this because some object that they have to bring into the school may cause the detectors to go off. That would cause them to spend more time then what they are already spending going through security.

In my opinion, students shouldn't have to go through security. But if they make threats to the school and any type of harmful actions then they should have to go though some types of security before entering the school. Over all, it would take up to much of the students time and may not be in the budget for the school.

Do you think students should have to go through security? why or why not?

Should it come out of the school budget?

  • Yes I do think that students should go through security because there are people bringing stuff into the school that they are not supsosped to bring in the buliding. I also think that if we did go through security I think that our school would be a lot more clean a better for new students.

  • Personally, I believe that students should not have to go through security because we are a tiny school. I also believe that if they did a security search, it would be an invasion of privacy. However, I think that they should consider it if something bad were to happen in school .

  • I don't think students should have to go through a security search everyday before school. I don't see why it would be necessary which such a small town and school like Harlan. Now, if it were a bigger city and bigger school then yes, I would understand why some do searches.

    • I completly agree with you. If our school was much larger and had more problems then the security would be needed. But since our school is so small it isn't needed and would not be money well spent.

  • I do not think students should have to go through security before entering the school. I think that it invades our privacy. It will just take even more time away from students too. And with Harlan being a smaller school, I don't see why it would be necessary.

  • I am on the fence about is we should get searched before getting into school. Our small school probably shouldn't do this due to the fact that we are a small school and haven't had many threats. However, school districts in heavily populated areas might need to go through security since a lot of violence usually happens there. Overall I think that searches shouldn't start unless there is a school shooting or bomb threat.

    • Yes, Harlan is a small school and hasn't had many issues in this area yet. I am so thankful that we haven't and I'm sure our entire community feels that way. It would make some of the students feel safer but it shouln't be added unless we have issues within this area.

  • I don't think that students should go through a security search. I think that they are invading are privacy for no reason. I think they should do it if a shooting happens or if someone makes a threat.

  • I think that students should not have to go through a security search when entering school. I think this because it is an invasion of privacy for no apparent reason. If there happen to be a shooting or bombing at some point then that would make searches neccessary. If schools were to do this it should come out of the governments pay.

    • Yes, even though it may make some students feel safer, it may make other feel uncomfortable within their own school. It shouldn't be added to our school unless it becomes a problem and our school starts to deal with issues like this.
