Every day you can see students listening to music during class. Sometimes a teacher will ask them to take out their earbuds or take off their headphones. As a result of this, some students are annoyed by the fact that they can’t listen to music during class. So the question is… Should students be allowed to listen to music during class? Or should teachers continue to make the students take them out?

Many teachers can argue that students should not have their earbuds in. Many believe that they simply do not listen to the teachers and just care about their music. Sometimes during class, teachers let their students listen to music during work time. According to healthline.com, students are less stressed and are more focused while listening to music in the background of working. This may be a reason why teachers allow their students to listen during work time. But why do teachers not allow music during normal class time? This could be because they believe that students cannot hear the teacher as well while music is playing in the background. But is this belief true?

Many students think that they should be allowed to have earbuds in during class. Many students believe that they are more relaxed with music during class. Oftentimes when students have earbuds in, they can still hear the teacher talking during class. When students arrive at school, most are not excited. Many can argue that school is not a very exciting time/place. Most students believe that listening to music during class has many benefits. According to fnu, listening to music reduces anxiety. And to many studies, school can cause lots of stress and anxiety. Meaning that music can make students feel at ease while at school.

As a student, I can say that music helps students during school 100% of the time. As I speak for most, it makes us feel relaxed, at ease, happy, ect. So why do teachers want to take that away from us? Yes, they may feel that we are not listening, however, instead of yelling in front of the class, just quietly ask us to turn it down. I can understand if a student has music blasting and it is disrupting the class. However, if a student can hear the teacher, and the music is not distracting, why tell us to take our earbud out?

After many studies, I can conclude that there are both good and bad effects to listening to music during class. I believe that students should be allowed to listen to music during class. Unless there is a test, or students are being disruptive, all students should be allowed to listen to music during class.

Do you think students should be allowed to listen to music?

    • I agree. When students are listening to music, the classroom will be nice and quiet. It will/would be very peaceful for other to concentrate and I am very sure that the teacher would enjoy the peace and quiet.

  • I think that students should be able to listen to music during class in certain situations. I think we shouldn't be able to listen to music during tests or when we are learning really important things. I feel if you are working on your own things and the teacher isn't talking then we should be able to listen to music. Music helps a lot during class.

    • I agree. Only certain situations should students listen to music. Students should not listen to music during a test. While it could help them, there is always the chance of a student cheating. It is also important for students to listen to the teacher while they are teaching or just talking in general.

  • I think that students should be allowed to listen to music If they want to because some students need to and it help them pay attention. Listening to music help student focus more during class but if they are struggling then they should listen to music as long as it is school apporiate.

    • I agree. The music should be school appropriate just in case the earbuds were to be disconnected/unplugged. If the music is too loud, the teacher can kindly ask to turn it down. Though it is hard to come by good music that is fully clean, I believe that students can manage. I think that teachers could loosen their grip on restriction for considered, "clean music", but as long as the student is being respectful of others, it should be ok.

  • I think that students should be able to listen to music if they want unless they need to be paying attention. Listening to music while working can help many students. It can help them focus more if they're struggling with that, so I think that they should be allowed to listen to music.

    • I totally agree with you. Also, students should only listen to music if their grades are good. If they are bad, teachers will suspect that the problem is music, even if the music is helping more than hurting.

  • I think studends should be allowed to listen to music only when you think it is a good time to. When the teacher is teaching and wants you guys to pay attention then that is not a good time but if you guys are just working then yeah so in my opinion I think it just all depend

    • I agree. Students should not just listen to music whenever they want to. They should only listen to music when it is an appropriate time. If needed, they should ask the teacher if it is ok.

  • I like listening to to music in class because it helps me focus and I can't hear people whispering or just making small little noises. If the teahcer is giving instrustions they can ask the kids to turn it down or just take it out for the time being.
