Should Harlan have early outs every week?

Besides a day off of school, early outs are the next top thing for some of a student's favorite days. There has always been an idea and theory that an early out once a week for schools should be mandatory and useful for the school. Some people are for this idea and many others aren’t. Around the world, some schools have early outs once a week. Harlan doesn’t, but should that change?

Some of the pros that would come with a weekly early out would be giving students more time for mental health and homework. I think some teachers sometimes feel like they do not give a lot of homework, but when every teacher for every class gives “a little” homework, it all adds up. Sometimes students struggle to finish it all while trying to balance family, sports, jobs, and more. Giving an early out once a week could be a helpful idea for those who struggle with finding the time. Another pro is when a student is given more time, the school will begin to see overall academic improvement. Schools would see fewer failing grades and better test scores overall.

The cons of a weekly early out are the problem of the teachers having to plan around it. Some teachers struggle with fitting their longer lessons into shorter days. It also gives students less time in class to retain and learn the material being taught. Another problem is the transportation issue. This could lead to some students being home alone on these days due to parents' work schedules. It also messes with people's extracurricular activities. Some sports may struggle with the once-a-week time change, and it could even mess up game and practice times.

Overall, I think that the benefits of a weekly early out outweigh the cons of them. I think that the school could see such an increase in grades and scores within the classrooms. I think that it also gives teachers more planning time and more time to spend with their families and friends.

  • I think that Harlan could have early outs every week. I know some schools have early outs every wednesday for PD days. It would also benefit the students that have extracurricular activities, practices that are outside of school. An early out once a week sounds reasonable.

  • Yes, I think that Harlan needs early outs every week. I think that it can benifit teachers and students. Teachers can use the time to grade test and assignments. students can use that time to take a brake from school and study or just have fun. That is why I think that Harlan should have early outs every week.

  • I think they should. When I went to West Des Moines schools, they got out early every Wednesday. I never figured out why but it was really nice to be able to get home earlier. It could help a lot more kids here. I don't think it would affect anyone's academic performance.

    • Yea I agree with you, I went to Atlantic and they had early outs every wednesday, and a school in KY i went to they had early outs every Friday and it benifited alot of people.

    • I agree with that, and it also gives teachers more time to grade and do there work. With the extra days it adds up to it would give time to learn lessons.

  • I agree, I think that pros of a weekly early out outweigh the cons. School weeks start to get very long the longer you are in school, especially in the winter months. Early outs give students time to rest, finish homework, and spend more time pursuing activities. I think that a weekly early out would help students catch a break, as well as teachers.

  • I think that an early out once a week is a good idea. In the end, I think it is a routine that you will get used to regarding extracurricular practice and transportation. Furthermore, I think that it would benefit the students because they will have more free time.

  • I don't think that we should have early outs because the school year is based on how many hours we are in school.  It would be nice if we had early outs but I would rather just get the school year over. I think that we would benefit more if we just had full days.

  • I think there are many pros and cons to having early out days more often. It would allow families more time to spend together and give students a little break during the week. There are some cons though, like, it takes time away from learning/doing work, the schedule change may be confusing for some people, and it is hard for everyone to adjust.

  • I think that the school overworks the students. If there was one early out atlest once a week, It would help. An avaerage school week is about 40 hours. That is about the maximun that full time workers work. Not to mention, students also have jobs. Not that much time to relax and peacefully study.
