Should Harlan have early outs every week?

Besides a day off of school, early outs are the next top thing for some of a student's favorite days. There has always been an idea and theory that an early out once a week for schools should be mandatory and useful for the school. Some people are for this idea and many others aren’t. Around the world, some schools have early outs once a week. Harlan doesn’t, but should that change?

Some of the pros that would come with a weekly early out would be giving students more time for mental health and homework. I think some teachers sometimes feel like they do not give a lot of homework, but when every teacher for every class gives “a little” homework, it all adds up. Sometimes students struggle to finish it all while trying to balance family, sports, jobs, and more. Giving an early out once a week could be a helpful idea for those who struggle with finding the time. Another pro is when a student is given more time, the school will begin to see overall academic improvement. Schools would see fewer failing grades and better test scores overall.

The cons of a weekly early out are the problem of the teachers having to plan around it. Some teachers struggle with fitting their longer lessons into shorter days. It also gives students less time in class to retain and learn the material being taught. Another problem is the transportation issue. This could lead to some students being home alone on these days due to parents' work schedules. It also messes with people's extracurricular activities. Some sports may struggle with the once-a-week time change, and it could even mess up game and practice times.

Overall, I think that the benefits of a weekly early out outweigh the cons of them. I think that the school could see such an increase in grades and scores within the classrooms. I think that it also gives teachers more planning time and more time to spend with their families and friends.

  • I like the idea of having an early out every week, but I think that it could mess up a lot of schedules. For students like me, that work right after school, it might mess things up a bit. I do think it would help students out but I highly doubt the school would go through with something like this.

  • In my opinion, I would not want Harlan schools to have an early out every week. I feel this way because there is a required time for students to be in school per year, and giving them an early out each week would make students have to go to school for more days, making summer break shorter. I also believe that it would create problems for teachers to schedule around it. Because they wouldn't have planned for an early out prior to it, they might need a certain amount of work to be done in a day, but they might not be able to. I do think this would help students by giving more time for other things, but it could also increase their amount of homework, because not as much can be done at school.

  •  I think having early outs are great but then the days will add up. And then we will have a longer school year because of the time we miss and it probably will go through the summer.

    • Its doesnt add up to that many days. I went to Atlantic almost my whole life and we didnt get out much longer after Harlan.

  • In my opinion, I do not think that Harlan should have early outs every week. In theory, having a shortened day of school every week sounds great, until you think about it logically. We ultimately would just have to make up this missed time in the summer.

  • Having a early out every week seems pretty good. But if you add up all the time that we are let out early and that makes more time in the summer that we have to go into.

  • I like the idea of an early out every week. I am busy with jazz band 3 out of the 5 school days and a break would be really nice. It leaves more time to do homework and out of school activites. With day light savings time, it gets dark sooner and kids that have to feed livestock, such as myself, it calls for more time to work outside while it is still light outside.

  • I think that having an early out every week would be nice. However, we would probably end up having to add more time on to the end of the year because of it. I like the sound of it, but I don't think that it would be that great. I would rather have full weeks and get out earlier for summer.

  • Early outs every week sound awesome. Although, we will probably end up with more school at the end of the year which does not sound awesome. I would rather have a good amount of summer than have extra school due to early outs.

    • I agree with that. The time for early outs gives teachers and students a little break for homework and grades, and it doesnt eat up your time on the weakend.
