Should Halloween be a Federal Holiday?

Halloween, unlike many other holidays, is not a Federal Holiday. Halloween’s culture has changed over the years. Now it is all about costumes, candy, and trick or treating. Back then Halloween was about celebrating the end of summer and the beginning of harvest. People would light bonfires and dress in combines to “scare off ghosts.” Over the years Halloween has changed tremendously.

Some people say that Halloween should be a federal holiday. They think it is just as important as other holidays and government run businesses should get the day off. The days before Halloween are just following the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas in terms of how much people are buying and all of the money going into the economy. Because of this, people think that Halloween should be a day off.

Others would say that there is no real point of having Halloween be a federal holiday. Trick or treating is at night and there isn’t a reason to prepare all day long. Some people think that Halloween doesn’t have that great of a meaning so it shouldn’t be considered a federal holiday. I think I would agree to that, Halloween is a holiday that isn’t as important as others like Christmas. I don’t think people need the whole day off, especially when the main part of the holiday happens at night.

Do you think Halloween should be a federal holiday?

If so, why?

  •   I don't think that Halloween should be a federal holiday. Not very many things happen on Halloween, you don't get together with your family or eat dinner together, all you do is get candy from strangers.

  • I don't believe Halloween should be a federal holiday. Federal holidays I believe mean that all government workers get the day off, and for an event that really only last 2 hours I don't believe a lot of government workers would like to miss a good 8-10 hours of work. Yeah, it being a federal holiday wouldn't be very helpful to those with government jobs who can't work on federal holidays.

  • I do not think that halloween should be a federal holiday. It isn't as important because most people just go trick or treating and that happens at night. It isn't like Christmas where you eat food, spend time with family, and get gifts. All you get from halloween is candy.

    • I agree, the part where people celebrate happens during the night.

  • No I don't think halloween should be federal holiday because it not as important as like christmas, easter. Also I don't think halloween should be federal holiday because lot of parents don't get that day off from their job neither do kids get off of school.

    • I agree, it doesn't have as much meaning as other holidays.

  • I do think that it should be a federal holiday. It has been a federal holiday for so long and it hasn't been bothering anything.  There is a saying that goes if it ain't broke then don't fix it.  I don't think that there is anything wrong with Halloween so I don't think that we should get rid of it.

    • It hasn't been a federal holiday, that is why we haven't ever gotten the day off for it.

  • I dont think that halloween should be a federal holiday because it isnt a day long thing that people would have to take time off of work for. I think that for some people it is a religous holiday but for most people it is just like anyother day and doesnt have any special meaning to it.

    • I agree, I think that there is just as many people that don't celebrate it than do.
