Sesame Street “Sees Amazing in All Children”

On April 10th, a new character, Julie, will be part of the children’s show-- Sesame Street. Julie has autism and she is part of the autistic spectrum. The creators of Sesame Street have worked extensively to create characters that show that everyone is different and being unique is a wonderful thing! After meeting with 250 autism specialists, the makers of the show created the cute, yellow character to portray the most common traits of autism. In the past, the show has also had a blind character, a girl with an incarcerated parent (a parent in jail), and a muppet with HIV. Although one single character can not portray every trait of an autistic person, it helps children to better understand.

  1. What do you think of the new character that is being added to Sesame Street?

My answer- I think this is an amazing idea to create diversity and creating awareness for viewers of the show. The way Sesame Street creators add new and unique characters adds so much more to the show.

2.)   If you could add a new muppet to the show what would the character's traits be?

My answer- I would create a character that was adopted. Since many people/children are adopted or are being fostered, this would really connect to viewers.

  • Good job Justina!

  • This is such an awesome idea! This new character is teaching kids to treat everyone the same, regardless of their differences. I would create a character with divorced parents or someone who is fighting something like cancer. Many experience something like this in their life.

  • I mean I don't see how it will be a bad thing, I am pretty sure the kids will like it. as long a they can entertainer kids I am sure it will be ok to ad new characters to the show. He would tell the truth no matter how hard it would be to people

  • I think the new character is a great idea. It will teach children to not judge based on how people are. Everyone is different and children need to be taught now about different types of people and how all people should be treated nicely. I would create a muppet of a different race to show not to judge a person based on race. This will show children that just because you are a different race than another person doesn't mean that they should be treated any worse.

    • Great idea! The thought of a new muppet of a different race would be fabulous! It would ultimately show the kids that there are many different kinds of people and cultures around the world and that everyone is human.

  • In order to decrease close-mindedness and ignorance, you must start by educating when people are younger. It’s very exciting to know a show as widely known as Sesame Street is making a great effort to reach equality for all. Taking into consideration how horribly people from other countries are treated, I would love to see the show introduce a foreign character or even a character whose first language isn’t necessarily English. Many small-minded Americans believe you aren’t a true American if you speak English with an accent. Your ability to speak a language “perfectly” shouldn’t define your nationality, especially in the United States, where we don’t have an official language.

    • Ir really like your idea about creating a foreign character. To move from a different country in real life would be extremely difficult, especially if one didn't speak the "normal" language. Children who watch the show would see that it is okay to be different-- in speaking terms and skin color/appearance.

  • I think that this is an amazing idea. Not only to create diversity, but to inform children about the different situations people are dealing will. This also allows children who may be going through the same thing one of the characters to feel more accepted. I think new character idea could be someone with divorced parents.

  • I think this is awesome because everyone is unique and it does a good way of introducing this so children. If I could add a character to the show maybe have one thats parents are divorced because I go through that and not many people know what it's like.

  • I think that this new character addition to Sesame street is a great way to create a diverse character lineup. If i could add my own character to the sesame street lineup, my character would probably be an otaku (someone who likes anime)and probably speak some Japanese a bit.
