Wendesday morning Sen. Jeff Flake made a searing speach that denounced Trumps attack on the media going as far as comparing it to what Joseph Stalin did during the thirty year time period he was in power in Russia during the nineteen hundreds. (at that time known as the USSR). In the speech Jeff Flake wrote "it is a testament to the condition of our democracy that our own president uses words infamously spoken by Joseph Stalin to describe his enemies," Flake said. "It bears noting that so fraught with malice was the phrase 'enemy of the people,' that even Nikita Khrushchev forbade its use, telling the Soviet Communist Party that the phrase had been introduced by Stalin for the purpose of 'annihilating such individuals' who disagreed with the supreme leader (abcnews.go.com)." Flake had made this speech to coincide with the date of Trumps "Fake News" Award. Flake described the attacks on the media as "shamefull and repulsive" and accused Trump of inspiring autocratic leaders throughout the world. Flake aslo stated that "This feedback loop is disgraceful, Mr. President," said Flake, addressing Trump. "Not only has the past year seen an American president borrow despotic language to refer to the free press, but it seems he has in turn inspired dictators and authoritarians with his own language. This is reprehensible (abcnews.go.com)." This is Flake's second adress targeting Trump from the senate floor since october. At the end of the his speech Flake states "If we compromise the truth for the sake of our politics, we are lost." (abcnews.go.com).

do you think what Sen. Jeff Flake said comparing Trump to Stalin justified? If so, why?

Do you agree with Flake?

If you were in this position would you write the same thing? If not, what would you write differently?

  • Good topic choice but be sure to use paragraphs to better effect and also be sure to capitalize words that should be. Also be sure to hyperlink to your story. You also didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 20 points.

    -10 late.

  • I believe that what Flake said is definitely justified. The media is not supposed to be simply a tool of the presidency, it is a check on the governors not the governed. It is hyperbole, Sen. Flake isn't saying that Trump is equal to Stalin. I agree with Flake, it is disgraceful to attack a whole industry based on some people. This is reprehensible, as Flake says. I would write something similar, but I would take out about Stalin and use language that criticizes his attacks on the press and compare it to Nixon.

  • 1.  No I don't think he should have say things like that about Trump Stalin is diferrent from Trump.

    2.  It not Justify because Trump I guess is sort of trying to do goods in the US.

    3. No i won't I won't write anything I would just be in the background and see how things goes.

  • No, I definitely do not Think that Senator Flake is right. Joseph Stalin was a dictator and murdered millions of people. I believe that many people may disagree with Trump on many topics, but he is by far no Joseph Stalin.

No, I do not agree with Jeff Flake.

  • No I don't think Senator Jeff Flake is right he shouldn't have said Trump is like Stalin. Stalin killed many people. Trump has never killed anyone. He does say some chilidish stuff but that doesn't compare. I do not agree with Flake he shouldn't have said this. If I was in this postion I would have written it differently.

  • 1) No, not at all. Stalian killed many people. Trump has never killed any person. Stailan also had control over the press. He made the press say only positive comments. This isn't true about Trump. Half the Media in the whole world hates Trump.

2)No I don't agree with flake. I think he over reacted and should keep his buniesses to himself.

3)NO, I would have not gone this far.

  • I don't agree with Flake in comparing Trump to Stalin because Stalin was one of the most ruthless "ruling with an iron fist" type of dictator. Stalin also killed hundreds and thousands of people and as far as we know Trump hasn't killed anybody. Stailn was controlling of the press and clearly Trump doesn't have control because it is all negitive things about Trump. Do you really think that Trump would talk about himself badly? I strongly desagree with Flake.

  • I don't agree with him because, he said trump is like stalin, and that is to far, because trump really has done anything bad like Stalin. I would write it differently, and I wouldn't compare trump to anyone because he is his own person.

  • I personally do not agree with Flake because to go that next step to say Trump is someone like Stalin, that is a little extreme. Stalin killed thousands of his own people who he didn't like or they didn't agree with him. Trump has his flaws but he is not as bad as Stalin. From my knowledge Trump has not killed anyone since he had become president.
