Schools are shutting down a child's creativity

A child's creativity is crucial to their development as they get older. When you are in first grade doing projects that require you to use your imagination helps your brain development and essentially establishes you as an individual. However now schools are starting to have less projects and more paper and homework. My mom is a teacher at the elementary school, where she told me that no classroom does any projects like how we used to do when I was younger. It is honestly sad to think that these young first and second graders aren't getting to do any kind of creative projects to help better their learning like we used to when we were kids. Many studies show that children learn better and are more engaged when they get to be creative while also learning. A child's creativity in the classroom is crucial. And its sad to think that its beginning to be less common for kids to learn with colored pencils and crayons, and instead with just a paper and a pencil.

I personally don't think that I would be where I am today without doing things like that at a young age. Drawing things for my parents and for other projects helped me see that I was good at drawing and that I could pursue a career in it. Taking away a child's creativity takes away their individuality. Its hard for someone to differentiate themselves from everyone else when all you know is the same assignment with the same outcome. I feel that starting a child off with no creative outlet sets them up to be less creative when they are older.

How do you feel about knowing that projects are becoming less common in the classroom?

Do you think children should get to do art projects in the classroom to better their understanding?

Do you think it could effect them later in life?

  • Great topic choice Emily! I do wish it was a tad longer and also be sure to link sources as you do mention their are studeies that show what you are saying. Also be sure to reply a bit more frequently.

  • I feel like it is important for young children to get hands on learing when they are young so that they can understand how the world works at a young age so that they are prepared for the future but I dont like how projects are becoming less and less common.

  • Everything boils down to preference as some point. Some kids just simply don't like art projects while others adore them. However, I don't believe we should remove projects completely from schools as it would seem unfair to those who want to go down a more creative route, and this would be a great gateway for them to go through in order to pursue that dream.

  • I think that kids growing up should be surronded by projects, and art. As they get older though, many times, unless interested in art some people get bored of it. Also, it is less for a stressed student to have to worry about. Overall, at a young age children should be doing projects and getting better understandings.

  • I think that fewer projects is a better thing because then it doesn't affect your grades as much. Although some projects are fun and kids have a better time doing them instead of lots of homework, I think that homework is easier to get done. Some classes might be better for a student to do an art project but others not so much.

  • it sucks that there are less projects but I expected this when the pandemic hit so I am not to upset yes they should do there art projects at school to help learn how to draw nicer this could make kids relie on there parents a lot more which could lead to somthing bad so Ihope it just stop right here and does not change much more

  • Kids should be able to do art projects in school. Kids who do less projects in school won't be able to be creative  resulting in them probably not being creative later in life. I think it is kind of sad that projects are becoming less common because they were alway fun way to learn

  • I feel bad about children not getting a lot of projects in school. I useally like doing projects because it was hands on. For me personally doing things hands on makes learning things easier to understand. Are projects should also happen because that can free there creativity that children have.

  • I think that doing projects were very helpful as a kid. You not only get to learn, but you also get to be creative and chose how you learn. It also helps them begin to develop time management skills and learn how to cooperate with each other.

  • I think that each new generation is getting more expectations to act older than they actually are. Pre-school and Kindergarten are made specifially to help kids not only transition into actual schooling but to help show them that school is fun and a place they get to be creative in their learning. We are expecting them to go right into learning mode. We can't do that if they aren't interested or engaged in the learning material. Projects and fun creative ideas help keep a childs attention span. Not a paper and pencil.
