No Consent leads to Congress

Earlier this week, founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg appeared testifying on Capital Hill. The reason behind the testifying is that there was a scandal that took place where millions of people who are members of the Facebook community had data that was shared with Cabridge Analtyica. Even though this data was acquired legally, the data was shared with a company that worked closely with the Trump campaign. In the fine print of Facebook's services, it says that there must be users consent to share their information, and Facebook did not abide by that rule and shared data anyway.

Read more about the story here.

In your opinion,

What regulations could be imposed on all social media to prevent such things happening again?

What are other ways that users information can be protected?

Should there be consequences for this action, or should users just let it slide?

Personally, I believe that there are a lot of regulations that have been put in place for social media, there is already a terms and conditioning page, and a terms of service page, where most users just blow through the fine print and users need to be more aware of the policies that they are agreeing to. I believe that both the different social media companies, and the users just need to abide by the rules that are set, and make sure that information and data stays safe.

Also, I personally believe that there should be a fine or at least a small punishment put upon facebook. Millions of United States users were affected by this action, and it can not go unpunished.

  • Great job Kelli!

  • I think that whatever people put on social media is instantly online and therefore public to anybody. It is naive to think that anything you put on social media is 100% private and therefore people should just be careful about what they put on social media.

  • I definitely think that there should be more regulations especially when handeling peoples personal information. Really you shouldn't be sharing too much information on social media especially if you don't want anyone to know it. I think there should be some type of consequence for this.

  • I think that social media is pretty good on regulations, maybe just enforcing it a little bit more. I also think that they should only share information if you want it to and not give out very personal information. I think that there shouldn't be much of a consequence and they should let it slide because it already happened.

    • I agree with you 100%! I think that there are plenty of regulations on social media, but I think that there needs to be a lot more enforcing of the rules! If you give permission, I think that there should be opportunities to share data for social media, but I think that users need to know that they are giving their consent and fully give their consent. I also understand where you are coming at from a side of no punishment. I think that if the information wasn't leaked, users wouldn't even know that they were affected, so users should let it slide.

    • I definitely agree. I think that a lot of times regulations are laid out quite clearly, but users need to understand what they are signing up for, and reading what is going to be happening. At the same time, it is very effective to have ads that clearly have an impact on you, so it makes sense to have that data shared, but legally and illegally sharing needs to be monitored a little more.

  • Well I think social media keeps information pretty protected but they could enforce a stronger regulation to be sure of it. I think maybe they should allow only certain questions about personal information so that not a lot is getting released. It depends on the situation to let it slide or not.

    • Consumers are not as careful about their personal information on the internet then I believe they should be. The internet is not the place to have all of your personal information out there. However, I also think thta social media is almost as secure as it can be, at the time being.

  • 1. They have already have good amount of regulation they just have to enforce the rule if somone break the rule.

    2. Don't put information you don't want people to find out about, and make sure you put up a good password so no one can guess it.

    3. Let it slide this time what done is done. No one can fix it now.

    • There are so many different regulations! I think that it has come to a point where it is difficult to find more regulations that can be placed to protect users. I agree that the rules and regulations jus tneed to be enforced. I agree that users also just need to be more cautious as to what they put out onto the internet.
