Man arrested for failing to return a VHS tape

James Meyers Jr. was driving his ten year old daughter to school when police pulled him over for a broken brake light. After doing a background check on James it came back that there was a warrant for James for not returning the VHS tape, "Freddy Got Fingered", which he rented back in 2002. Since James had his daughter and heading to school he was allowed to take her to school and then to turn himself in. After turning himself in he was charged with "failure to return hired property" he was taken to Jail but shortly released on a written promise and is scheduled for appear in court next month.

1.Do you think that all of this is "too much" over reacting with a warrant and court getting involved?

2.Do you think there is a better way to come to a resolution besides court such as just paying a fine?

  • Good job on this story but you didn't do the other story.

  • I think being arrested for a VHS tape is ridiculous especially because it was just a fine. Just let the man pay the fine and forget about it.

  • Yes it is to much it is an overreaction. He should just pay the fine.

  • I think this is riduculos all over a VHS tape. Just make the man pay the cost of the movie and be done with it.

  • I don't know why he would be arrested for that or even why there would be an actual warrant out for him because of that, but if I were him, I'd pay the $10 fine or so if the rental store is even still open and be done with it. I do think it is a little extreme for the circumstances.

  • Yes this sounds so stupid. One it is a VHS tape so I'm sure it couldn't cost that much. Two you shouldn't be arrested and have to go to court over something so small.  I guess there maybe no other way to get the money.

  • I do think that this is over reacting, and I am surprised that they even want a VHS tape back since everything is digital now. A better resolution would be just to pay for the movie, and don't over do it.

  • This is an unbelievable story. It's insane that this is what our police have to do. It's bad enough that he had to be arrested for not returning a movie, but one that we rent 14 years earlier? Yes, there has to be a better way to deal with this issue.

  • I think that a fine is a fair punishment.

  • I think that this is way out of control and VCR's aren't popular anymore so it shouldn't be such a big deal.
