A judge  ordered a homeschooler placed in school and even scheduled a trial after a falsely reported that the girl was illiterate. To make matters worse, the judge refused to examine the girl’s test scores, which indicated she was reading and writing at the level of her grade, the Home School Legal Defense Association () reported. The scores were from an independent agency. The controversy started when the mom, named Vanessa, moved to a different county in Kentucky and enrolled her daughter in a private school. But she soon realized that homeschooling was a better option, so she pulled the girl, who until that short time had been home schooled her entire life.

That’s when things went wrong.

"The private school … contacted the local director of pupil personnel (DPP), who called Vanessa at night and told her that she needed to file her notice of intent to homeschool immediately,” HSLDA’s Darren Jones wrote. “But the very next day, the DPP filed charges in court, accusing her of neglecting her daughter’s education. He claimed that the daughter had only attended school 20 days in her entire life and that she could not say or write the alphabet.

The judge ordered Vanessa to enroll her daughter in a school, and he scheduled a trial for six weeks later. HSLDA then hired an independent consultant, who evaluated the girl and found she was working above her capacity. The consultant reported he had “no idea why someone at the school would have said that the girl didn’t know the alphabet. She’s a good reader (with very good phonetic skills).” The consultant even added in an email, “The mom does a great job!”

What is your opinion on Homeschooling?

Would you homeschool your kid if you thought it was a better option?

My thoughts:

I think homeschooling is great for some people, and it may work for them, but everyone has their reasons for homeschooling. I would definitely homeschool my kid, because the concepts taught in schools are hard for some people, especially the math some schools implemented.

  • Well done Samantha! You could have commented a few more times overall.

  • I have respect for the parents who are really giving their kids the best when homeschooling. I just worry that there are people out there who are neglecting their children's education. I personally think public school helps give kids more social skills and real life applications, but if I honestly believed my kid would benefit from homeschooling, I would do so.

  • I think that if people want to do homeschooling, they should, but there are actually a lot of benefits of going to a public school instead that can be helpful in the long run. If I felt like my child wasn't getting the right education that they needed, I would probably just get them a tutor or some help at school instead of homeschooling because I want them to know how to be more comfortable around other people and make some friends so they aren't lonely.

  • I think that if some people want homeschooling, then they have the right to do it. I think that homeschooling would be a great option if you wanted to see with your own eyes how they are progressing.

  • It's just another way to teach a child there is nothing really different between it and school of course if you can you should try to avoid it because the child is better off in some kind of school so they can make more friends there. I'm not saying that they won't make friends but they'll make more friends, but if they are being bullied then pulling them out and homeschooling them would be the better option. Yes.

    • I agree, there's really no difference between public school and home schooling. And if a child is being bullied, or is really shy, they can be home schooled, but it's really up to the parents to decide.

  • Homeschooling is good for people that want to do it but i would never want to be home schooled

No probably not because then you cant really have a full time job

    • Actually, there's options for online school, so the parent can have a job, and the child could learn at their own pace, and not be distracted by people around their age.

  • Homeschooling is a great option for others and it can be really good. It's the same with normal school too. For some it works, some it doesn't. I would definitely homeschool my kid if I thought that was the best option at that time. I would make sure that they would actually understand the work and would have fun.

    • I completely agree with you, I would make sure that i understand everything before teaching it to my kid, and make it as fun as possible, so that they are having fun, instead of being bored out of their mind.
