Italian Student Missing in Egypt Found Dead

Giulio Regeni, 28, was last seen heading to a party that was honoring the fifth anniversary of the start of the uprising that ended the 30-year reign of Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak. He was in Cairo to conduct researches on Egyptian trade union for his doctrate. But that was on the 25th of January. After his disappearance, his friends and family launched a social media campaign in order to find him, by using the hashtag #whereisgiulio.

Giulio's body was found Thursday on the side of the road, with bruising and swelling all over, especially on the face. The body was almost impossible to identify.

Nagy, the lead Egyptian prosecutor of the case, claims that "this was no accident. We suspect that it was a criminal act".

The Italians also want to help participate in the investigation, though it hasn't been confirmed if the Egyptian government will allow them to cooperate.

"Obviously, we are very upset for what happened, and we asked the Egyptian government to cooperate and to allow the Italian authorities to be involved in the inquiry to understand what happened there," says Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni. "It's not acceptable that, if an Italian citizen is a victim -- and in such a way is a victim -- of a tragedy in Cairo, there is no cooperation."

What do you think happened to Giulio while he was in Cairo?

Do you think that what happened to him had to do with the work he was involved in when he was in Cairo?

Do you think that the Egyptian government will allow the Italians to help in the investigation? Why or why not?

  • Good job overall but again, be sure to include your opinion within your summary.

  • I think maybe he was mugged since he is a foreigner or maybe someone that supported President Hosni Mubarak wanted to make an example out of him. I don't think it had anything to do with what Giulio was doing, it doesn't seem related anyway. I think the Egyptian government should show someone cooperation and allow a couple of Italian authorities to help with the case since it is one of their citizens that was killed.

  • He got held up on the road and a robbery went bad or something. I don't think what he was doing had anything to do with it because there are tons of people celebrating the uprising, so why attack him. No I don't think they will help because it is their country and their system, so if Italian help won't make any difference, they don't need them. I don't think I would trust the Egyptians to get it right though.

  • I think that he got kidnapped because why would you be bruised and on the side of the road? I think it defiantly  had to do with what he was ding in Egypt other than that he had no reason to get hurt. I think its a fine idea to let the Italians help because it was one of their people.

    • I agree with you-that must have happened sometime leading up to his death. And it was one of their people. I think they have every right to help with the investigation.

  • Wow this is an interesting story! I think he may have gotten kidnapped or something, who really knows! ha. Maybe he and a few others didn't get along and some people were just after him! I think the Egyptian government should allow Italians to investigate a little further.

    • I definitely agree with you. Like I said earlier, they should be involved in this investigation. But do you think there would be any reason why they couldn't be involved?

  • I think he got kidnapped and abused. I do think it had to do with his research because otherwise they would have no reason to hurt him. I don't think they will because many deaths have happened since the uprising and getting another country involved in the investigation could be dangerous.

    • I definitely agree. This was a popular current event, and a lot of people also think it had to do with his research.

  • I think he had heat with someone else and they beat him up and killed him. Or he was walking on the side of the road and someone hit him with their car.
