"It's Now or Never"

In July of last year, Conrad Roy III died of carbon monoxide behind a K-Mart in Massachusetts, he was dating a girl online, Michelle Carter, she encouraged him by saying “You just have to do it, you have everything you need. There is no way you can fail. Tonight is the night. It’s now or never.” For months after the suicide, she denied encouraging him, until one night she texted her friend after finding out that the cops would be going through Conrad’s phone. She went on to tell Conrad before he killed himself, “Everyone will be sad for a while but they will get over it and move on,” She even went on to tell him methods of how he could do it, bag, rope, or carbon monoxide. Eleven days before Conrad commit suicide, he suggested that he and Carter die by suicide together, “like Romeo and Juliet” he said. Days before his suicide, Michelle Carter texted her boyfriend, “There is no way you can fail...You’re strong...I love you to moon and back and deeper than the ocean and higher than the pines, too, babe forever and always. It’s painless and quick,” referring to the suicide. Her next court date is October 2nd and the judge is deciding on whether or not the involuntary manslaughter charge should be dropped.

If you were the judge, would you drop the charges? Why or why not?

If a friend of yours was thinking about committing suicide, what would you do to prevent it?

  • Interesting topic choice! Be sure to proofread to eliminate errors-look at first sentence. Also, be sure to reply more frequently.

  • I would do everything in my power to stop them, but if I were the judge I wouldn't drop the charges because I believe anyone who assists by telling someone to kill themselves should be put in jail. It's not right to encourage suicide.

  • If I was the judge i would not drop the charges because it was assisted suicide. If i had a friend that was committing suicide i would go straight to an adult to try and help him/her out.

  • If I was the judge I would defiantly convict her. It is because of her that he is gone, it's because of her his family grieves and I think she deserves the worst punishment. If my friend was thinking about suicide I would tell them how much they mean I would let them know how much they are cared about.

  • If I was the judge, I would throw in jail be she basically did him to do it and he did it. Yes she didn't kill him but made him do it. He looks like a good kid so I don't know if he had problems or what. But I would never commit suicide. It's like taking the easy way out. He is going to miss out on so many things. Getting married and having kids are just a few things.

  • It would be horrible for anyone to convince someone to end their life. But there isn't much she could be charged for, even though it was mainly her fault for encouraging him.

  • When you get to cases like these it's not always about what you feel but about the facts. Yes it's a terrible thing to encourage somebody to commit suicide and take ones life in their own hands. But she didn't force him into anything only encouraged. It's like the saying that teachers scold you about, "You would jump off a bridge if somebody told you to would you?" She shouldn't be charged with involuntary manslaughter but she should get help and be held accountable for her actions.

  • If I were that judge I would throw the lady in jail for assisted suicide. Online dating is stupid anyway, you do not get a chance to actually talk face to face unless you video chat which is also over raided. You can get scammed so much with online dating from what I have heard. He should have realized how much of a hole he had dug.

  • I don't think I would charge her for manslaughter because she didn't actually kill him, but I think that she should pay for not telling the police about the situation in the first place, for encouraging him, and for lying to the police about her encouraging him to commit suicide.

  • I mean, it is kinda of crazy for someone to be dating someone they hardly know in person. Maybe if he wouldn't have met her online, he would've been able to tell what a crazy horrible person she is. Which still doesn't make it okay for anyone to say those things to another. I wouldn't drop the charges on her, there are obviously messages between them proving what she said. There is no way she will get out of that easy.
