Is Tesla's self driving mode safe?

Tesla's have been engineered to be the safest cars in the world. They believe that technology will improve safety. The Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y have all been tested by the U.S. government's New Car Assesment program and achieved the lowest overall possibility of injury of amoung all the other cars that they have tested.

The question is... Are they really that safe?

They have advanced sensor coverage that has 360 degrees of visibility and up to 270 meters of range. The autopilot mode in tesla vehichles allows the car to steer, brake, and accelerate within its lane. Independent to the car, the tesla allows its own updates and advancements to provide new features over time. With navigation, the tesla will suggest lane changes to get around slow cars or trucks. With the advanced cameras and sensors, the autopilot is able to navigate through windy roads with just driver supervision, not intervention. All of this is designed to be the safest it can be, though all drivers should stay alert and ready to take control. Multiple warnings over anything that is possibly occuring pops up on the screen to inform the driver, such as front and side collision warnings. All of these advanced opportunites are available with responsible drivers and many safety precatutions such as staying alert at all times behind the wheel.

In my opinion, the self-driving mode that each tesla model offers is something that can be loved or hated. It is definitely something to get used to but I think that as time goes on, they will get more and more advanced and safe. From personal experience, it does know what it is doing, there is hardly ever a need for complete override on the drivers' part. I think that while it is still developing completely, it has a great start.

Do you think Tesla's autopilot driving mode is safe?

Would you ride in a self-driving Tesla?

  • I think that it might be safe if you are still watching the road and not asleep because you can then react and take over if it starts going the wrong way. I probably still wouldnt put my whole trust in the car because I think that I have a better chance of not crashing into anything.

    • Yes, I agree. It's hard to trust the car completely but I think over time, people should start trusting them more because of more information to come out.

  • I don't think that the self-driving mode on Teslas is safe because it causes more accidents and more deaths. I would never ride a self-driving Telsa because you never know what could happen and everything to it or malfunction and not drive right I would trust myself more than self-driving Telsa.

    • That's understandable that you would trust yourself but that the point of having the override option. The car isn't locked into self drive and it easily gets out of the self driving mode.

  • I don't think Tesla's autopilot driving is safe. Although the government says it's safe, the computers could malfunction, causing accidents. I would ride in a self-driving Telsa. I would never purchase a Tesla though.

    • I think that while there could be malfunctions, there could be malfunctions in anything! There are many aspects of our life that we let technology or something that  could malfunction do something.

  • I do not think that the self driving feature on Teslas is safe. I would be too nervous to use self driving mode, just because I trust myself over a robot. I understand that they have been tested by many different companies, but I still would never personally use this mode.

    • That is understandable, they definitely would take some getting used to and it is most likely very common for people to trust themselves driving over a computer.

  • No, I dont think the self driving on a tesla is safe. Because I personally dont trust robots or technology because we never know if it will turn on us or have an error and end up killing us. I dont think I would ever ride in a self driving tesla because its not trustworthy and could kill you.

    • I think that while they could be unpredictable in some sense, they have been tested thouroghly enough to be legally safe on the road.
