How long should lunch be?

Lunch at our school is 30 minutes. During this time students need to get to the cafeteria, stand in the lunch line, eat their food, and put their trays back. So should lunch be shorter or longer? There are pros and cons to both sides.

The CDC recommends that students should get at least 20 minutes of time to eat their lunches. This does not include the amount of time it takes for students to stand in the lunch line and get their food. However, many times once students are seated they only have 15 minutes or less to finish their lunch. Nutrition experts say that 15 minutes or less is not enough time for kids  to properly eat and digest their food. It is also better for students mental health if they have time to socialize during lunch.

However, if lunch was longer, the school day might also be longer. This would leave students with less time for after school activities, and can also make students more tired from a longer day of school. If lunch was longer and the school decided to keep the school day the same, then lunch would take away class time. Then the teachers would have to fit their lesson plans into shorter classes, and students would have less time to learn the material and ask questions about it.

In my opinion, I think they should just keep lunch period at 30 minutes. I feel like I have enough time to eat lunch, and I don’t think it's worth making the school day longer or taking away from class time.

Do you think lunch should be longer or shorter?

If so, how long do you think lunch should be?

    • I agree, if lunch was longer then school would probably be longer too

  • I think the lunch period is good where it is at because I get done with my food and still have time to talk with friends for like 10 minutes. Standing in line takes like around 10 to 15 minutes and that should be plenty of time to eat and socialise. Lunch is fine where its at.

  • I think lunch should be for a hour so kids can get out and talk to students and also have time to chill and catch up on things. I think that it would be fair if it was longer because kids coulds go out to eat.

    • I think a longer lunch would be nice, I just wouldn't want school to be longer because of it

  • I think our lunch is fine at the current length it's at. Personally speaking, I feel as if we have just enough time to eat and socialize with people. Sometimes it feels like we have a little too much time! Though I do acknowledge the problem of digesting food, if that is a bigger problem than I think it to be, then lunch should be longer.

  • In my opinion luch should be longer because it would give students more time to eat their food, talk to friends and go to the bathroom if needed. It will also allow them talk to any teacher if they need it. I think lunch should be 45 minutes so students have more time to eat and rest.

    • I think 45 minutes would be a good amount of time for lunch, I just wouldn't want the school day to be longer

  • In my opinion, 30 minutes are enough for lunch break. There is definetly enough time to eat without being stressed and to socialize with friends. If lunch would be longer, the school day would also be longer and I think many students wouldn't want to have a longer day.

  • I think that 30 minutes is enough time for students to eat lunch. I think that if it was shorter, students wouldn't have enough time. Personally, I always have enough time to finish my lunch and talk to my friends without running out of time.

    • I agree, I always feel like I have enough time at lunch
