The whole country knows what happened during the Monday Night Football game against the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals. The 24-year-old Damar Hamlin collapsed due to a cardiac arrest. This cardiac arrest could have been an instance of commotio cordis which is a blunt force impact disrupts the heart’s rhythm. This type of cardiac arrest is very rare.

In the 21st century 11-player tackle football was trending in high school, until the 2009-2010 academic year. The newest survey from the NFHS shows that in the 2021-22 academic school year there are less than 1 million people involved in 11-player high school football. That is the first time on record with fewer than a million players in 11-player football. This is a decrease of 12.2% from the peak in the years of 2008-2009. Football isn’t the only sport decreasing in size basketball is also decreasing. On the other hand, track and field and soccer are increasing. Soccer is increasing the most from the sports. In the 2018-19 school year there were 4.5 million boys involved in sports and there is 3.4 million girls involved in sports in that same school year. Now there are 200,000 less girls and boys as well, 400,000 people, in total, less in a 4 year span.

In my opinion, I don’t think that it is because of the injuries. I think its from the new technology. I think that the injuries also have some play in the decrease of people or students but not as much as technology. The new technology is starting to make people “lazier”. Instead of actually playing the sport you can play in online with friends instead.

Why do you think the number of students are decreasing?

Do you think that technology and online games play a part in the numbers?

    • I agree. There are a lot of people or students that struggle with grades and adding sports wouldn't help. If the did do sports they wouldn't be able to play because of their grades.

  • I think they're decreasing because people don't want to get hurt from playing sports. Also a lot of kids are just wanting to stay at home and play video games or hangout with their friends because it's easier than being in a sport. Yes, I think technology and games play a big part in the numbers of school sports.

    • I agree. People now just want to stay indoors and more do activities anymore. Technology is a big part in that because there is nothing else to do indoors beside be on technology.

  • Yes I think the number of students playing sports is decreasing every year because they are to lasy. I think tecnolgy is part of the reson kids are not playing sports. I also think kids are to lazy and they just want to go home and play vido games.

    • I agree with what you said. Nowadays people are getting very lazy because they can just order items online and just drive there and pick it up for example, same with sports.

  • I think that the numbers are decreasing because kids don’t want to get hurt playing football and maybe some other sports.  I also think that some kids would rather play video games, sit on the couch, and just be lazy. I would rather play sports and I might get a job during high school. After high school then I could get a full time job.

    • I agree. High school students think that they can just play the sport online instead of in person because its the same. Well I think its not, its a whole different experience.

  • I think that the numbers are decreasing because the kids want to do other things like work and make money.  I also think that some kids would rather play video games and play on electronics than go out and play sports.  I would rather play sports in high school because you have the rest of your life to work.

    • Hayden, I agree with eveything you said. People like high school students want to make more money and want to work. Colleges are getting very expensive these days.

  • I do not think the number of kids playing is going down because students are scared of getting hurt, I think it is because they are becoming more and more lazy every year, and would rather go home and play games on their phone or other devices.
