The whole country knows what happened during the Monday Night Football game against the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals. The 24-year-old Damar Hamlin collapsed due to a cardiac arrest. This cardiac arrest could have been an instance of commotio cordis which is a blunt force impact disrupts the heart’s rhythm. This type of cardiac arrest is very rare.

In the 21st century 11-player tackle football was trending in high school, until the 2009-2010 academic year. The newest survey from the NFHS shows that in the 2021-22 academic school year there are less than 1 million people involved in 11-player high school football. That is the first time on record with fewer than a million players in 11-player football. This is a decrease of 12.2% from the peak in the years of 2008-2009. Football isn’t the only sport decreasing in size basketball is also decreasing. On the other hand, track and field and soccer are increasing. Soccer is increasing the most from the sports. In the 2018-19 school year there were 4.5 million boys involved in sports and there is 3.4 million girls involved in sports in that same school year. Now there are 200,000 less girls and boys as well, 400,000 people, in total, less in a 4 year span.

In my opinion, I don’t think that it is because of the injuries. I think its from the new technology. I think that the injuries also have some play in the decrease of people or students but not as much as technology. The new technology is starting to make people “lazier”. Instead of actually playing the sport you can play in online with friends instead.

Why do you think the number of students are decreasing?

Do you think that technology and online games play a part in the numbers?

    • I agree. After school a lot of people just want to go home and relax especially because they just got done with school work. Also students want to get their homework done early too.

  • I think that their are many reasons that the numbers are decreasing. Injury could be part of it but I also think that there are other things that kids would rather spend their time doing these days since there is much more technology then their used to be.

    • I agree. Students today are getting a lot lazier and they spend a good chunk of their time indoors instead of getting fresh air and spending time with friends face to face.

  • I don't think that the only reason the numbers are decresing are because of injuries, I think that it does play a part in it though. I think kids are definitley more lazy these days and don't want ot put in the effort and the work that the sports require. But injuries could play a part in it meaning that track has more people in it because it is not a contact sport.

    • People nowadays are getting lazy and don't like putting effort into it. They also think that they are terrible and quit because they didn't start out really good.

  • I think there is a number of reasons why the number of students is decreasing. A lot of kids would prefer to work instead of playing a sport. Technology is a big part of it too, I feel that kids have got lazy due to a large amount of technology surrounding them.

    • I agree a lot of students want to work and earn money instead of playing sports because playing sports isn't an option for their future. Everyone has a VERY low percentage of making it to professionals where they do make money.

  • I think the reason the number are decreasing is because either there parents don't agree with entering the sport, because of the injuries that could happen. Also, the numbers are dropping because the teens don't care and they just want to be lazy and stay at home.

    • I agree. A lot more students don't care about sports than people think. Parents also play a big factor in their students playing sports as well. So their children don't get hurt.

  • I feel like the main reason the numbers are decreasing is that teens want to just work, work, work and they don't have time for sports. Working for teens has become a lot more popular because everyone is focused on money. Another common reason people have is that they don't like their coach, a lot of coaches are starting to treat their players wrongly, so it makes the players want to quit the sport. I don't really think that technology and online games are a part of it because a lot of players like the "real world" feeling of the sport so I think there are other reasons for the numbers decreasing.
