Healthier School Lunches

School lunches around America are now becoming more healthy. They are serving foods with whole grains. They are also including more fruits and vegetables for students. These types of foods have less sodium in them. Ninety percent of children in the United States consume more sodium than they are suppose to. They are hoping new, young students are open to this new lunch style so that it can continue into further years.

I think having healthier foods can be a good idea, but a lot of students do not like it. With having these healthier foods, some students refuse to eat because the food is not good, or it is not something they like. I think a lot of the food goes to waste, and ends up being in the garbage. At the end of the school day we go home and eat a bunch of unhealthy foods because we did not eat lunch. Which in the end, it could lead up to us being even more unhealthy.

  • Great job Lexie!

  • I think that they are making our food healthier, because there are people that do overeat. But what about the people that don't want to eat a hamburger that was boiled in water. They'll just go home after school, and eat junk food before supper making an even more unhealthy diet. I don't think we should be forced to eat healthier. If someone is trying to lose weight, they'll do it on their on time. Usually people on diets will bring their own healthy food for lunch. The school doesn't need to do it for them. If they're gonna give us healthy food, at least make sure it's of good quality.

  • I think they are trying to make us eat healthier because they don't want us to put as much "bad" food in our bodies. It doesn't bother me but sometimes the meals just don''t seem appealing

  • They are trying to make us eat healthier, but really the stuff they serve has so much grease on it sometimes its just disgusting and it gets thrown in the trash and is just a waste of food.

  • I think there are pros and cons to this.. We need a healthier life style, that's for sure. But I can see why some people feel it's being taken too far. It's their body, right? And like you said, a LOT of food gets wasted, so a lot of money gets wasted.. Nothing good comes from wasting money. I don't mind most of what we eat, but hopefully they don't continue to push, and push this. The whole "blue zone" thing, is something else in my opinion. We can't bring food from home? We have to sit all day with nothing to eat but the school lunch, and a lot of kids barely even eat that? It's just an unhealthy NOT to eat as it is to eat poorly.

  • Because they want us not be obese. And my opinion is who ever is in a sport or something they can eat they want. And also they worry to much anyways.

  • Schools making lunch healthier is potentially a good idea, but our schools food is not healthy and it is so disgusting that so much gets thrown in the trash and it just a waste. If we kept record of how much food went in the trash when we were back in elementary school when lunch was awesome compared to know, the rates would be so high these days because nobody likes the food!! I know almost everybody is STARVING during the day because lunch is so bad, and for some kids this is the only full meal they get, and they need to start thinking of making the meals more enjoyable, so we actually want to eat them.

    • I think making it healthier is a good idea too. I agree that the food they give us is not appetizing nor healthy. They should give us more to eat, or at least feed us things that we would eat.

  • The school lunch is terrible, which is why I bring my own lunch every day, and I like the point Lexi makes about us not eating lunch, and then going home and eating a lot more and sometimes unhealthier foods because they can't feed us lunch. Also, what about the athletes in the school that are burning up many more than the 2000 calorie range. All the football, volleyball, and cross country players/runners need way more than the pidly amount they feed us. I agree that we should make lunch healthy, but also edible too.

    • I bring my lunch almost every day as well. I do not like the school lunches that we have. That is a good point that I also had thought about, athletes need better food than what our school provides.
