Half Of Adults In Poll Say They Have Been Body Shamed

56 percent of adults out of a poll of 2,000 say that at some point in the last twelve months they were body shamed. Most of the shaming was about someone's weight because the poll showed that that was the case for 6 of 10 people. There where many other characteristics of their bodies that were being pointed out like hair, height, skin, eyebrows, and even the size of peoples feet. The shaming hasn’t only been done by unknown people on the internet or on the streets. Some say that there own friends, family, significant others, etc. were the ones body shaming them. Some people are saying that the media using people of different sizes and body builds as models is helping with their self confidence.

  • Great story choice and well done Delaney! Be sure to incude your thoughts/voice in your rsummary and I also think you could have replied back to a few more students.

  • I believe body shamming has become a bigger problem today becuase of social media. It has created a perfect person which the media has spread. It has protrayed that everyone should look like one person. I think women have a harder problem with this. They want to attract a significant other and to feel good about themselves. However, everyones has their insicurities and want to fix them. Also, the media is more focused on the women than the men in the beauty area. To fix this people need to be more kind to other people, even if they don't like something about them. Men and women need to be proud of their body and not care what other people think of them.

  • Body shaming is often a bigger problem for women than men. Today, I feel women are more judgmental than men. Women often find little insecure of other women to pick on. This is anywhere from height to hair, and so much more. Some women need to feel better about themselves, and body shaming other women in order to do this. If we would all learn to love others for who they are, no matter how they look, we could fix this issue. Even just standing up to body shamers could make a huge impact, not only in fixing this issue, but the life of that woman or man could be impacted forever.

  • I think it is because everyone thinks you have to look like this or this. In the end, it just if you feel or are happy with the way you are. If you don't like it change it. I don't know if it's more of a problem for men or women because online it seems like it happens to females a lot, but that doesn't mean it is not happening to men. I think people should just be nice and if they are comfortable in their body and like how they are you shouldn't care.

  • Expectations have been set for how a person should look in society, and the use of media only spreads these expectations. I think that body shaming has become more of a problem because these days, people can do all sorts of things to alter their appearance. People like to stick to a norm, so if there's something different than what they see they judge it, whether in good or bad ways. Body shaming is definitely a problem for both sexes, but more so for women. There seem to be a lot of horny men that use the anonymity of the internet to be harsh on a woman's appearance. I am a believer of letting people do as they please with their bodies, so I think that to fix the issue of body shaming needs to start with people being more accepting of how another person looks.

  • The world is chronically oversexualized which has lead to the creation unfair and unattainable expactations for a person's body. Body shaming is not a new creation of the 21st century, but the anonymity of the internet not only makes it extrordinarily easy for anyone to shame another person but also to spread awareness of this form of bullying.

    • I agree with you that this is not a new thing that is just starting in the 21st century, it has been around for a long time. I do feel that now with technology and social media it had become more of an issue becuase it is so easy for someone to comment on anothers post and point out what they might see as a flaw in thier beauty.

  • I feel as though body shaming is such a prominent problem because of all the media's exposure to the "perfect" body shape. Social media and influencers emphasize a certain body type that they feel like should be the normal, even if it's completely unattainable. Because of this, people everywhere feel like they should fit into this certain look, and when they don't, they feel bad about themselves. Other people judge others because they think that everyone should have a "perfect" body shape, so they degrade people who don't match their description of perfect. I think the problem is equal for both men and women although each gender has different descriptions of what the ideal body shape is. I think that a potential way to fix this stigma would be to represent all sorts of different body shapes in the media to spread the idea that there is no perfect body type.

    • I agree that with media it has become more of an issue because we are being exposed to the "perfect" body more and more. I think that this is an issue for both men and women, but I sometimes feel it is a bit more pressued on women. I really hope that in the future we will continue to use more models of different sizes and body builds.

    • I agree with you so much that this is a real problem in todays world. To me it also seems like more of an issue for women because we get a lot more pressure to look a certain way (like small sized models). I really hope that at some point soon there will be even more models of different sizes and everyone will start to accept that not everyone needs to look the same in order to be beautiful.
