Hackers steal money using Starbucks app

Starbucks has an app that allows you to pay at checkout with your phone, it can also reload starbucks gift cards by automatically drawing money from your bank account, credit card, or paypal and as of lately a group of hackers have found a way to use this to steal money right out of peoples accounts through the Starbucks app.

It happened to Jean obando who in just five minutes had aproximately $550 stolen from him through this app. Starbucks later told Obando that he needed to take it up with the bank because they could not refund the money, after awhile obando was refunded his money and the hackers have yet to be caught.

How would you react if this happened to you?

What do you think of the use of an app to pay for your bill?

  • You only replied once.

  • Hackers are a very big threat today, so we have to be careful about how we go about our online spendings

  • I would be very mad if this happened to me. This is why i don't want anything like this on my phone. There is too great of a chance to have a hack or have your phone lost or stolen.

  • I would be really angry like allen said. I would want my money back. I don't think an app like this is reliable because there are way to many unsafe ways that your money could get stolen

  • I would be very angry that someone app was causing money to be stolen from me. It is nice to have but sometimes it is not as reliably because stuff like this will happen.

  • I would want my money back and they should get better security on their app. I would not use the app.

  • I would not be to happy if this happened to me. I love starbucks and I love how having applications for stores you love is a good idea. But this is crazy that hackers are getting into this.  I think it is convient to buy stuff over an application to help pay for a bill or whatever. But it is scary and risky at the same time. So to me it is a 50/50 chance

  • I wouldn't be very happy with this because I just lost 550 dollars. I also think that you should just pay with regular cash.

  • I wouldn't be happy and I would want my money back. I think they should get a little better security before they open it up to people because it will just cause a lot of problems like it is right now.

  • I think that it is a good idea in theory. But if it is that easy for hackers to steal money from me then I don't want to use and app like that because I don't want to lose my money.
