Geometry Grading System

In Geometry the grading system is based on proficiency of the material. This scale is graded through a 4 point scale. If you get a 0 that means you have 0% and have not shown an understanding of the material. Next if you get a 1 you will receive a 50% and this means that you have demonstrated a beginning level of understanding. Then if you receive a 2 you have a 70% and have demonstrated a developing understanding, after that is a 3, which is 80% and have shown progress in understanding the material with only a few errors. Then if you get a 4 you will receive a 90% and that means you have shown a proficient level of understanding. If you receive a 5 you will receive 100% and have shown mastery level.

For tests they are still  graded out of a four point scale but instead of them just being out of 4 they will be converted into 100 points per standard. Those then will be converted into percentages and will be 85% of the students quarter grade. On their website it is not clear on what the conversions are when they are converted but overall if you receive a 4 out of 4 on all of the standards on the test you will receive a 91% which is an A-. The only way you are able to change the percentage to 100% is to do a mastery project. This means that the only way to get 100% on your quiz is to receive a 4 on every standard and to do the mastery project.

On their website they say the purpose of this grading system is to show proficiency in all standards. They said that the purpose of your grade is to, “Reflect to what level of understanding a student has mastered on a specific skill/concept”. The mastery project is always optional but if you do it you can change the 4, (91%), to a 5 which is 100% on a standard. For example if you score 3’s on 4 of the standard and a 4 on 1 of the standards you can only change the 4 to a 5 and make that score 100%. Then all of those scores will be  added together and averaged out for a final grade.

In my opinion, when it says the purpose of your “grade” is to reflect an understanding of the material,  In real life this is not the case.  At my dad’s job there is ultimately  no one that has a more master understanding than him at what he does in all of the midwest. His pay/grade is not based on his understanding, it is based on his ability to do the work when it comes to test time.  No one cares how much knowledge he has. They care about his ability to fix what is broken/ take the test and ace it. If he fixed what was broken/ got all the questions correct, and his boss said he had to do more in order to get full pay, he would go find a new job.

Do you think that the Geometry grading is fair?

Should we go back to the original grading system?

  • Yes, I agree that the grading system is a scam. I believe that if you do 100% on the test that should be your final grade. You shouldnt have to do another project that really doesnt have any resemblance to the test. I think you should get a grade based on what you know not a 90% adn have to do another project.

    • I agree that if you ace the test you should get 100%.

  • I absulutly hate this new grading system for many reasons. First I think it's not fair because you shouldn't have to do more work to get 100% on a test if you don't get more people. I think the knew grading system back because it will help many grades.

    • I agree that we shouldnt have to do more work just to ace the test

  • I think that the geometry grading system is very dumbl. Some people are not able to get the all 4's to do the mastry problem. So they get a lower score than they probably should have on their test. We should go back to the old grading system.

    • I agree that it should be 100 if you recieve a 4 out of 4

  • NO i feel like the geometry grading system is the worst it makes no sense to some people it makes them mad and they don't like it because if you get a 90 that's your highest grade unless you do a mastery project so you can only get a 90 in the class if you don't want to do the mastery project then you only get a 90

    • I agree that it doesn't make sense on why they do it.

  • I think its very unfair. If your Acing you tests and only getting 90%  is ridiculous. Many kids are gonna get the messege that they shouldn't try anymore because theyre not getting the grade they deserve. Parents are probably getting frustrated with the kids when really they should be at the teachers

    • I agree that for some kids the message of even if you ace it you wont get 100 will make them try even less on a quiz.
