Geometry Grading System

In Geometry the grading system is based on proficiency of the material. This scale is graded through a 4 point scale. If you get a 0 that means you have 0% and have not shown an understanding of the material. Next if you get a 1 you will receive a 50% and this means that you have demonstrated a beginning level of understanding. Then if you receive a 2 you have a 70% and have demonstrated a developing understanding, after that is a 3, which is 80% and have shown progress in understanding the material with only a few errors. Then if you get a 4 you will receive a 90% and that means you have shown a proficient level of understanding. If you receive a 5 you will receive 100% and have shown mastery level.

For tests they are still  graded out of a four point scale but instead of them just being out of 4 they will be converted into 100 points per standard. Those then will be converted into percentages and will be 85% of the students quarter grade. On their website it is not clear on what the conversions are when they are converted but overall if you receive a 4 out of 4 on all of the standards on the test you will receive a 91% which is an A-. The only way you are able to change the percentage to 100% is to do a mastery project. This means that the only way to get 100% on your quiz is to receive a 4 on every standard and to do the mastery project.

On their website they say the purpose of this grading system is to show proficiency in all standards. They said that the purpose of your grade is to, “Reflect to what level of understanding a student has mastered on a specific skill/concept”. The mastery project is always optional but if you do it you can change the 4, (91%), to a 5 which is 100% on a standard. For example if you score 3’s on 4 of the standard and a 4 on 1 of the standards you can only change the 4 to a 5 and make that score 100%. Then all of those scores will be  added together and averaged out for a final grade.

In my opinion, when it says the purpose of your “grade” is to reflect an understanding of the material,  In real life this is not the case.  At my dad’s job there is ultimately  no one that has a more master understanding than him at what he does in all of the midwest. His pay/grade is not based on his understanding, it is based on his ability to do the work when it comes to test time.  No one cares how much knowledge he has. They care about his ability to fix what is broken/ take the test and ace it. If he fixed what was broken/ got all the questions correct, and his boss said he had to do more in order to get full pay, he would go find a new job.

Do you think that the Geometry grading is fair?

Should we go back to the original grading system?

  • I do not agree with this, I think that if you do not miss a single question on the test you deserve a 100%. The teachers ask us to do our best and be proficient, but when we are proficient it is only an A-. If you got all A-'s on the test it brought your grade down arounf 6-7%. Even though you got every question correct.

    • I agree that if they expect us to do our best and we do we should get 100%.

  • I do not like the Geometry grading system at all. I don't like how you can Ace the test and still get a 90/100. I am not artsy at all, so it is very difficult for me to do the mastery. So how am I supposed to get full credit?

    • I agree that if you ace the test you should get 100/100.

  • I believe that the grading scale is unfair. I'm a person that has never been amazing at math but I usually get A's and B's on my tests and assignments. although I don't mind having B,s for a grade others do. it isn't fair to kids to keep points from them that they already earned. even though it's not a lot of points it could be enough to stop a kid from getting a scholarship to a college.

    • I agree that this system is messing with peoples grades.

  • I think that the geometry grading system is unfair because your grade is based on how much of the test you got correct. Having to do a seperate project to get a higher grade is not the same thing, you should be getting graded on seperate things. We should definitely go back to the original grading system. If a student gets everything right and understands all of the concepts they shouldn't have to do more to show it.

    • I agree taht your grade is based on what you got correct and not what you got profficient.

    • I agree taht the original grading system is easier and makes more sense.

  • I don't think the geometry grading is fair I feel if you got a 100% on a test you deserve that and you shouldn't have to do an extra assignment to earn it. I think we should go back to the ragular grading system. I think the grading system makes no sense and it should be back to normal.
