Geometry Grading System

In Geometry the grading system is based on proficiency of the material. This scale is graded through a 4 point scale. If you get a 0 that means you have 0% and have not shown an understanding of the material. Next if you get a 1 you will receive a 50% and this means that you have demonstrated a beginning level of understanding. Then if you receive a 2 you have a 70% and have demonstrated a developing understanding, after that is a 3, which is 80% and have shown progress in understanding the material with only a few errors. Then if you get a 4 you will receive a 90% and that means you have shown a proficient level of understanding. If you receive a 5 you will receive 100% and have shown mastery level.

For tests they are still  graded out of a four point scale but instead of them just being out of 4 they will be converted into 100 points per standard. Those then will be converted into percentages and will be 85% of the students quarter grade. On their website it is not clear on what the conversions are when they are converted but overall if you receive a 4 out of 4 on all of the standards on the test you will receive a 91% which is an A-. The only way you are able to change the percentage to 100% is to do a mastery project. This means that the only way to get 100% on your quiz is to receive a 4 on every standard and to do the mastery project.

On their website they say the purpose of this grading system is to show proficiency in all standards. They said that the purpose of your grade is to, “Reflect to what level of understanding a student has mastered on a specific skill/concept”. The mastery project is always optional but if you do it you can change the 4, (91%), to a 5 which is 100% on a standard. For example if you score 3’s on 4 of the standard and a 4 on 1 of the standards you can only change the 4 to a 5 and make that score 100%. Then all of those scores will be  added together and averaged out for a final grade.

In my opinion, when it says the purpose of your “grade” is to reflect an understanding of the material,  In real life this is not the case.  At my dad’s job there is ultimately  no one that has a more master understanding than him at what he does in all of the midwest. His pay/grade is not based on his understanding, it is based on his ability to do the work when it comes to test time.  No one cares how much knowledge he has. They care about his ability to fix what is broken/ take the test and ace it. If he fixed what was broken/ got all the questions correct, and his boss said he had to do more in order to get full pay, he would go find a new job.

Do you think that the Geometry grading is fair?

Should we go back to the original grading system?

  • Great topic choice and super job Molly!

  • I think the geometry grading is not far at all. So basically the teachers are teaching us 90% of the material. And then they want us to figure out and go beyond what they have taught us. I think we should go back to the original grading system because it gives us a fair reflection of our understandings

  • I personally do not believe that the new grading system that the geometry classes are switching to is fair. Even though I am not currently in geometry I still find it very confusing and unnecessary to try and change what has worked for this long. I am 100% on the side of returning to the old grading system.

  • Honestly, I don't think the geometry grading system is fair because if I ace my test and only get a 90% I'm not going to be very happy because of all the studying and prepping I did and all I get is a 90%. I think that we should just go back to a normal grading system.

  • I do not think that the grading system is fair. I don't see why it cannot be graded regularly. I took geometry last year and it was not that way. The grading system makes little to no sense and makes it hard for a person to get a decent grade. Seems they will either fail or do great.

    • I agree that it isnt fair to have it and since you guys didnt have it last year why do we have to do it this year.

  • I do not think that the geometry grading system is fair because none of the other classes use it. If the other classes used it, then it would be fair. I think that they should go back to the original grading system because of this.

    • I agree because why do we have to have this grading system and nobody else does.

  • No, I do not think it is fair at all. If you know 100 percent of the stuff she is teaching us then we should get 100 percent. Most high schoolers are extremely busy and many have goals to get good grades to help their GPA for scholarships and this is not helping. We go to school 8 hours a day and should not have to do a week long project outsitde of school especially if it's an "extension" of the test. You also shouldn't fix something if it's not broken so we should go back to the old grading system that was fair for everyone.

    • I agree that it isnt fair at all.
