Freezing Temps Cause 21 Deaths in Tennessee

Officials in Tennessee have said that the freezing temperatures and recent storms have caused a total of 21 deaths and 11 other victims to suffer from hypothermia over the past week. The governor of Tennessee, Bill Haslam, elevated Tennessee to a higher state of emergency. This means that harder hit areas of the state will be receiving state and federal assistance. Most of the state is seeing low temperatures but the snow and precipitation have gone down considerably. Their are also an estimated 44,000 power outages throughout the state.

What do you think about these recent deaths?

Do you think the state is doing enough to help its people?

  • Good job!!

  • The people that died are probably the ones that could't afford coats and heated homes.

  • I think that they could have been prevented if people actually were wearing winter clothes and stayed inside. I think the state is doing about all they can do.

    • Yea, i dont know why they wouldn't be wearing winter clothes if they would have at least looked at the forecast for the next few days.

  • Theres not much you can do besides stay inside and stay under a blanket. If people are dying then towns should be like shut down. I think the state needs to get some generators going to get the power back up.

  • What can they do to help? There's really not much the state can do other than tell people not to stay outside.

    • Yea, really the only thing that could help is the Red Cross,  like set up shelters and keeping people warm.

  • You can't help everyone but when it's this cold out you should really help people that don't have proper gear for the cold. But people also need to know that when it's so cold out it isnt a joke and it obviously can kill you.

  • I think that's horrible but it isn't like anyone can control the temperature.. And no I do not think the state did enough.

  • It's scary but I guess the people who died had accidents and were stuck in their cars with not enough warm clothes on or something like that. I just think people aren't prepared for the cold weather
