Four Americans Detained in Saudi Arabia

Last week, four Americans were detained (keeping someone in official custody) on suspected terror offenses. Now, the total number of Americans being held in Saudi Arabia is nine, according to the Saudi Interior Ministry. Four of them have been there since the 25th of January, and another four were detained in Late November of 2015. Their case is now under investigation. The ninth American has been there since 2007, but did not say what the conviction was for the length of the sentence. The Saudi Interior Ministry only gave initials of the nine, and did not give information about exactly what their alleged crimes are.

The list also includes 5, 152 other detainees-mostly Saudis- held, or investigated for terror related acts. White House officials said on Monday that "they couldn't confirm the reports of the Americans being held in Saudi Arabia."

"I don't have anything definitive with respect to the actual truth of these reports," State Department John Kirby said. "What I can tell you is that we're working closely with Saudi authorities to try to figure this out and to iron it out."

Do you think that these Americans should be kept in Saudi Arabia? Why or why not?

Do you believe that the US will do anything to get them out, or should they?

Is Saudi Arabia being fair with what information they decide to share? Why or why not?

  • Good! Be sure to share your opinion within your summary as well.

  • I think Saudi Arabia should be able to detain people they think is terrorist, but they need to be more forthcoming with information towards the country whose citizens they are holding. I think that if they are innocent then the US should do something, but if they're not innocent then leave them there, why take up space in US prisons when Saudi Arabia can handle them? Saudi Arabia should give a bit more information since these people could have families that have no idea where they are or why they're missing.

  • I think Saudi Arabia should be able to hold them if they are offering proper reconstruction and punishment. I think if Saudi Arabia releases them that the people that were released would be very angry at the government and be more likely to commit terrorist actions. I think the US Government should leave them be and if/when they are released, keep a close eye on them. I think Saudi Arabia is fine with the information they divulged.

    • I also agree. But they should at least give more information on why they are holding all these nine people there. We have people detained in our country from different countries too.

  • no because no one is left behind now matter what, I believe that the U.S should do something because they could have family's back home waiting for them to return

    • Then do you think that the US should let people go that are currently being detained from other countries?
