First women Statue made located in Central Park

Meredith Bergmann is known for expressing her love of history through art. She is creating the first real-life women statue in New York’s Central Park. There are only fiction character that are statues today for example, Alice in Wonderland and William Shakespeare’s Juliet. Bergmann’s statue is depicting three women’s rights pioneers, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Sojourner Truth. These women helped abolish slavery, women’s suffrage, and womens civil rights. Through private foundations, Girl Scouts, and others she raised $1.5 million for the statue. This 14 foot monument will be presented in 2020. Bergmann states, “This statue conveys the power of women working together to bring about revolutionary change in our society. It invites people to reflect not just on these women and their work for equality and justice, but all the monumental women who came before us.” The statue is going to look like these three women are having a conversation. In this conversation Truth is doing the speaking while Anthony and Stanton are writing. Bergmann says that this describes activism. I think that this is a very good idea it help give recognition to the women that have made a difference in our country.

1.) Do you believe that it is a good idea to start having more women statues in America? Why or Why not?

I think that it is a good idea because back then women weren’t given enough appreciation for the things they did to help our country.

2.) If you could choose a woman to become a statue who would you pick and why?

I think that I would choose like Rosa Parks or Harriet Tubman for all they did to help with slavery and African American rights.

  • Well done Lilly!

  • Sure, I believe it can be good and have for more people to view and learn about history they hadn't before. Rosa parks, because she was a great advocate vore rights and is still remembered today because of her achievements

  • I think that is good to have women statues because men haven't done everything in our world. There are many women that are important throughout our country and theyd eserve to be recognized as well as men. I would also pick Rosa Parks because she really pushed for women rights and she did well.

    • I agree with you. I also think that it is a good idea. I was surprised that there wasn't any already made. Women tended to go unnoticed in our history because of how men protrayed them to be. However, women made a lot of needed change in our country.

  • Yes I think it is, it shows off the great things that women have done and allows notable diversity and equality in the US. I believe I would pick Sally Kristen Ride, the first female astronaut from the US, considering becoming an astronaut is an amazing feat I believe it would a good statue that symbolizes womens strength.

  • I do hink it is a good idea to have more statues of woman around the United States because it shows that our country is equal. Woman didn't used to get appretiation for the things they did that till impact our country today. If I had to pick a statue of a woman to be built I would choose Susan B. Anthony because she wanted all rights for woman the same as men no matter what race.

    • I agree with you I also think that women should be recognized for what they've done as well as men in America's history. I agree any women that made a big impact for womens rights should have a statue because America wouldn't be the same today without them.

  • I like this idea because there aremany women who deserve a lot of credit for big and important things that happened in our country and they should be honored by this. There are hundreds of women who deserve a statue, however Rosa Parks or Susan B. Anthony would be very impotant people.

  • Yes, I do think that the U.S. should have more women statues made. One reason is that we should give credit to the women who stood up against popular belief that we are "less" than men. I would choose Carrie Chapman Catt. I would choose her because she also played a major role in the womens sufferage movement.
