Europe separatist group (eta) willingly disarms

For fifty years this group has been active throughout french and Spanish territories committing acts they believe are for the people. In 2012 the organisation declared a ceasefire and has been pretty quiet since then. Now they want to peacefully disarm and hand over their weaponry to the people believing that this will help the people become more prosperous. Many have taken to supporting the disarmament and leaving it at that but Spain is being a little bit more aggressive wanting names and details of previous attacks. There are even some rumors eta leaked the locations of weapons for the french government to find and secure.  Tomorrow there will be a official disarming day where the last of eta's weapons will be handed over with thousands of people showing up to give support.

questions

how does this peacemaking "holiday" effect your viewpoint on what would be considered a violent group?

do you believe Spain will try to go after eta after it is entirely disarmed?

my thoughts

I think this group just wants whats best for their people now and are ready to turn over a new leaf.

I believe Spain will back off after the event but will try to pry answers from the eta's past.

  • Good topic choice Steven but you didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 20 points.

  • It shows that they are trying to change there ways and it starts with the little things

I hope not because i want them to stay peacefull

  • I think when things like this happen, it's all very interesting. A group goes from doing bad acts to wanting to stop. What made them stop? Why did they agree to stop? Maybe those questions will be answered on this turn in day. I think Spain will also try to get answers out of members on missions. Sometimes that is to help the defense of Spain's army increase.

  • I think that this shows that they are trying to change to better the people. I beleive that Spain will try to get the answers they want bu won't do much more than that.

  • I think this could be a good sign, but then again, they could be using the disarmament to get officials off their case while they plot something bigger. I think Spain will back off but still want answers. It won't look good publicly if they go after a group that can't defend themselves.
  • I believe they are going for a better path but still have a lot to make up for and some of the violent acts can not be forgiven so easily. Spain will eventually stop being so hostile but will continue to want answers.

  • They may be giving over their weapons but the still committed violent acts. It doesn't make them any safer. Maybe, they are still a violent group even without weapons in my eyes.

  • I think that this group should still be remembered for being violent, but they should also be commended somewhat for choosing to surrender and end the fighting rather than drag it out and cause more unnecessary bloodshed.

  • I think that this group knows that the attacks they are doing are doing nothing to help the people and I think they finally realized that just disbanding and handing over the weapons will help the people alot more. I think they will because this happened in their country and they want revenge.

  • I think this is a good thing. Giving up their weapons peacefully is  a great show of respect and embracing peace. If there are crimes that were committed by some members of the group, yes I think Spain will try to get them.
