Elephants Coming To U.S.

The United States is preparing to receive 18 new elephants into its herd from Swaziland. As of now the 18 elephants consist of 3 males and 15 females who are located at the Big Game Parks in the southern African nation. Just last month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service granted the relocation of the animals into three zoos in the U.S. The three are the Dallas Zoo, Zoo in Wichita, and the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. The reasoning for the move is so that the Swaziland facilities can make room for rhinos. Several conservationist and other groups are stating the the relocation of these animals is not going to end well for the health of the animals as they are moving halfway across the world. They have made multiple statements stating the animals tend to survive better off in their natural habitats. As of now the relocation is still a go.

My Opinion: I think that we should inhabit the elephants into our zoos. This is because by transferring the elephants it allows for other animals to get a chance at rescue from poaching. Even though they are being moved halfway across the world, they will be treated in the same aspects as they are in their current location.

Questions:

Do you think they should relocate the elephants? Why or why not?

  • Good job overall but all but one of your replies was on the same day.

  • Yes. It makes room for other animals to be apart of the zoo. They may be moving across half the world, but they will still be treated the same from where they originally were.

  • Yes, the are making room so that they can take care of other animals and if other zoos can take them in then they should.

  • Yes. If they are making room for Rhinos then that means they will most likely have to make the Elephant enclosure smaller which isn't fair to the big animals. They need a lot of space to live and roam. Why not give them to someone who has that space. It's only fair for the animals.

  • I think that this is kind of exciting for the Omaha. I think it's good that they are going to the zoos because other wise they wouldn't have another place to go. This might make the chance of elephants becoming extinct decrease.

  • I think it is a great idea to relocate these animals. There is some down sides but there are mostly good. The elephants can be safe in a zoo and treated the same as if they were in their normal habitat. This also gives room to the rhinos for protection from poachers and can allow them to repopulate. This trip across the world is worth the safety and re population of endangered species.

  • I think they should relocate them because maybe it spread them out into the world. Greater chance of not becoming extinct. I also think it might not be a good idea to relocate them because it is affecting their natural way of life.

  • I think it be great for the elephants just because if they didn't find a place then soon the be extinct and not have many elephants anymore. Also It may be bad because if they are getting on a ship to get over here and like all the transportation it may be bad for them. Also be good because then maybe will be more popular at the zoo.

  • I can see either sides of this story.  I know that elephants are in danger of being killed for their ivory, so for this reason I would be okay with them being relocated to the zoos. However, I do believe that an animal survives better in it's natural habitat.  The question is, will the elephants have a better chance of staying alive in a zoo or staying alive in the wild? I'm somewhat torn on this topic.

  • Yes, I do think they should relocate the elephants. I think it is a good way, like they intend, to help the rhinos from being in as much danger. I think the move across the world will be hard and may cause a few issues, but because they will be put in areas as similar to their natural habitat as possible I think it will all work out fine and have a great turn out.
