Electric Aviation

André Borschberg, a Swiss entrepreneur, is working on getting electric motors in plains. Last summer he designed and flew the solar impulse 2 which was a electric glider powered by solar panels that covered the wings. The Solar impulse 2 flew all the way around the world while being fully electric. André has now launched his new company, H55 and they have announced there first Aircraft, the Aero1.  This plane is not a new design though, it is just a retrofitted single seat aerobatic flyer. It Might not take off and land vertically like the (VTOL) that Uber wants, although that not what André was designing it for. He wants his planes to be realistic, not futuristic. Rather that producing airplanes, H55 plans to make electric propulsion systems. This way they could make the systems and then have people introduce them to there own airplanes. H55 says the reason that they are designing electric propulsion systems is "there Simple". No more checking oil, fuel levels, or preheating the engine just turn it on and fly.

Question 1 - What are your feelings on electric flight?

- I feel like electric flight is the future for all aviation. Its more efficient, better for the environment, and like H55 its simple.

Question 2 - Do you think that using old planes to test there theory is a good idea or bad and why?

- I think its a good idea, by doing this they are wasting less time making new planes which would leave more time to streamline there equipment.

  • Good overall but you should comment more frequently and only commented on one day.

  • This is a really cool invention and I am guessing they have working on the project for a very long time. I think in the future this is how planes with work (or something similar.) I also think that using old planes to test is a good solution to save time and money.

  • I feel like electric flight is good and all but i just don't feel safe with the whole thing yet. I mean yes it might be efficient but like the difference between the two types of transportation is very odd i feel like it will break down somewhere.... and i don't think the old planes are safe i mean yes we can get them running again but you dont know how long they have sat and how different their engines were made then how they are made now.

  • I feel like it is a risk that I'm not willing to take. If someone wants to take the risk I wouldn't really tell them no. I would probably have the attitude of it's your life.

I feel like using the old planes to test their theory isn't a valid argument. It is outdated and not really reliable.

  • It seems very exciting and all but, even though it is ecofriendly, it's still going to take a big part of the world's budget. meaning that instead of finding a long lasting wat to save our planet, we are going to keep on creating things to "fight" against climate change. I am not totally against the idea but i think that it's such a small project that's going to probably only be opened the upper class of our world which isn't that many people so what's the use? Let actually use those old planes to build cars or other things that we use now to stop taking natures productions for a while but, that's just me.

    • Everything goes to the upper class first i agree with that, although the reason we still work to get new advancements is because eventually after testing and making things cheaper the rest of the people will be able to afford it. For example, airplanes when they first where made it was a show of wealth if someone flew on one let alone had there own, now a days i have a friend who lives very close and has there 3 seated plane and they are a fairly low income family compared to some.

  • I think it would be a huge invention in the near future but I don't know about all the malfunctions. I think old planes would be a bad idea because they might not work as properly as a new plane so if you want to try a new invention you should try it on a new plane because if there is a malfunction it might not be the device it might be the old plane.

    • The reason they are using old planes is because they are cheap and they work. Like most company's i'm sure they test there products multiple times in harsh conditions before even attaching them to there planes. I feel like most of the malfunctions have been fixed by the time they get to the people.

  • I feel like it could become big in the future when the technology comes to make it more efficient. I think its a good idea because it would allow you to see if it works before you spend a ton of money to build an entire new plane.

  • I feel this is the future because everything no a days is being powered by electricity and we all know that motors can be powered by electricity so there is no problem there. i think this is a bad idea because the old planes do not have the technology and are heavier and are not built out of the material that are new today.
