Driver pinned in between two semi trucks

A Oregon man named Kaleb Whitby was pinned in between two semi trucks on January 17, 2015. The roads were very icy and he wasn't able to see anything because of the fog. Whitby first ran into the back of the first semi causing his pickup to flip over. He saw more headlights coming towards the pickup and knew that another oncoming semi was going to hit him. He closed his eyes and prayed that everything would turn out to be okay. He gripped the steering wheel tightly as the second semi smashed through his pickup, crushing it like a soda can. The crash left only two things intact: The shell surrounding Whitby's seat, and Whitby, who was pinned between the two trucks. All Whitby had for injuries were a few scratches on his hand and a bruise above his left eye.

How would you have reacted if you were in Kaleb Whitby's situation?

Image you were that second semi driver that hit, do you think that you could have prevented this from happening?

  • Excellent job!!

  • For one, it's absolutely amazing that he survived! If I were in the situation, I would trembling and terrified! As for the other drivers, I would have tried to slam on my brakes and hope for something to happen!

  • I would be terrified that I would be crushed. If I was the second semi driver, I probably wouldn't be able to stop my truck because the roads were icy and it takes a lot of time to stop a truck and if I were to just slam on the breaks the semi would probably jackknife.

  • I would be terrified if this happened to me. If I was the second semi driver, I don't think that I could have done anything to prevent my truck from hitting Whitby's truck because the roads were very icy and the vehicles were traveling at or above 70 mph.

  • This would be soooo scary I can't imagine how they felt.

  • I think I would have reacted just like he did. There really is nothing more you can do other to sit there and pray you get lucky enough to make it out of the situation. If it was foggy and icy then the semi driver probably didn't have enough time to react to what was happening in front of him.

  • I would have prayed and closed my eyes.  No, because it was foggy and icy.  Semi trucks can not stop that fast.

  • If I was him I would of closed my eyes and wait for it to happen.  I dont think the second semi driver could of prevented it because the road where icy and it takes a while to slow down the truck.

    • I agree, If you were the driver you probably wouldn't be able to do much so the man just did the right thing and prayed.

  • I think that I would have completely freaked out and would be emotional traumatized. I think that it was just a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time and that they couldn't have done much to avoid it if the fog was as thick as they described.
