Delaware Prison Siege

On Thursday, February 2, an 18 hour siege at Delawares maximum security prison occurred. Inmates in building C held the facility from approximately 10:30 AM on Wednesday until early morning Thursday.  Inmates stopped emergency teams from entering by building a wall at the entrance of the prison. Urgent to access the hostages inside, first responder's to the situation had to bring in a backhoe to knock down the wall and enter the prison. Upon entering the prison, officials found a female counselor of the facility unharmed. They also found 16 year veteran, Sgt. Steven Floyd deceased inside the prison. Unsure of his death, his body has been sent to the state division of forensic science for an autopsy. The Governor of Delaware, John Carney assured people that a full investigation will occur to determine the cause of the incident and to prevent from something like from happening again.

  1. What would you do at this prison to prevent another incident like this one from occurring?
  2. If you were an inmate, would you attempt another escape like this? Why or why not?

My opinion: If I was in charge of this prison, I would analyze the causes of the siege and make the smartest actions to ensure the safety of facility staff and inmates. I would certainly not attempt another escape. After the failed one, the security would be upped and it would make things way more difficult for the inmates to escape. If it failed, your sentence may be extended so it would not be worth it to me.

  • Excellent job except for your avatar pic.

  • If I were in charge of this prison I would do a full investigation and get all of the facts then I would analyze it and find out exactly what went wrong. Then I would rebuild and improve those stations, I would then find out how to stop these plans from happening by finding out how they were talking among themselves. But if I were an inmate I definitely wouldn't try it again soon since now the guards would be more strict, I would probably wait a little bit.

  • Adding further security to the prison is a better idea, but limiting their access to more objects might start even more riots. The main purpose for their action was for them to receive a proper education and a better rehabilitation system. Personally, I wouldn't try to escape, especially after considering all the possible consequences.

    • This is a very interesting reply, different from anyone elses. I like the way you are interpreting this article. I'd have to agree with you, maybe the inmates just weren't happy with the treatment they were receiving and the conditions they were living in.

  • I would watch the inmates better and make sure there not doing anything bad.

Yeah because if it worked it will work again untill they fix it

  • To prevent things like that they should have some more guards employed and they should increase the security measures. They should also cut the inmates abilities and freedoms so they won't even be able to plan things like this. Now that it failed the people responsible to take care of the prisons are going to prepare for events like this and they will increase security measures and all that, so no I would not try to escape again.

    • Your totally right Marisa, having more staff on hand would really help keep the inmates under control if something like this were to happen again. Keeping inmates under a tighter control would help too.

  • I think that the prison could add more guards to every building in the prison. They could also have higher technolgy levels to not let it be so easy for the inmates to go anywere. If I was an inmate I would not try another escape like this because the guards are preparing for something like this to happen again,

    • I agree with you Austin, the prison will certainly be ready for another escape attempt in the prison. Escaping would be nearly impossible in my opinion, not a good idea if you ask me.

  • I think that the prison needs better security for sure. There is no reason why this should have happened. They also need to make sure that there isn't anything that the prisoners could access to get things to help them escape or plan anything else. If I was an inmate I would not try to escaped because if it was a maximum security prison then I know I shouldn't be able to get out.
