Cub Saved by Oregon Man

A man from Oregon was on a hike when he spotted a bear cub laying near the trail. On Monday, Corey Hancock was was hiking on the Santiam River trail when he spotted a 3 month old cub on the trail. The cub was "motionless" and Hancock thought that the cub could be dead. The cub twitched a couple of times which indicated he was not dead, so he waited for about ten minutes just in case the mother bear came back for the cub. He took the cub to the Turtle Ridge Wildlife Center and was thanked for the efforts in saving the cub but was told that he should have left the cub there. By taking the cub, the animal will probably not be reunited with its mother and will not learn necessary survival skills.

1. What would you have done if you came across a cub laying in the middle of a trail?

2. Do you think he made the right decision in taking the cub?

I would have probably left the cub there just because I wouldn't have known where to take the cub. I think he made a good decision because he thought the cub was going to die and needed help, but I think he maybe could have contacted park officials before taking the bear.

  • Good job Anna!

  • I would have just left it there and then call the closest wildlife center and then i would also call the police. Well he probably didn't know that this would happen if he had taken the cub so i think he did the right thing but know he probably regrets it since it wont be able to join its mother again.

  • If I saw the cub on the trail, I would try to help the bear cub, if I knew where to take the bear or where the closest vet was  so that I could get the bear cub help for him to stay alive. I think that he did the right thing by taking the bear to get help, because by him taking the bear cub to the vet he saved the cubs life.

  • I probably would've freaked out and would've went and got somebody else and then would have petted it or something because baby bears are really cute. I think they made the right decision because it might have saved the cubs life if something happened to the mother bear.

  • I would call the DNR, because I don't want to go anywhere near a bear cub in case the mom is around. I think that he should have left the cub there, because the mom may still come back for the cub.

  • 1. First, I would find a safe spot to be where the mother or cub wouldn't attack me. Next, I would warn others.

    2. I think it was a good gesture to save him. I also think this wasn't because the mother could've came back and hurt him.

  • I would be very careful if I came across this cub because if the mother was close she could be very protective and harmful. I fell he made the right decision as he saved the cubs life.

  • I probably would have left it there in case its mother was around. I think so because he could have died.

  • I would look around for a mama and go back to my house to grab a gun and call some people to go with me because you never know where the cub's mother is. I think that he made the right decision because if he didn't rescue this cub, it could have died.

  • I would have looked to see what was wrong with the cub. I think it was right to take the cub because if something was really wrong with the cub then they could have helped the cub.
