Crashed Dreams

On Monday, November 28, the LAMIA flight 2933 crashed in Rionegro, near Medellin, Columbia.

71 people, including Brazil’s Chapecoense soccer team were killed on that flight and only six people were able to survive the airplane crash. Under the survivors were three players, two members of the crew, and one journalist. This small football club improved themselves so good that they started to become national heroes. The soccer team was supposed to play in the Copa Sudamericana, which is South Americans second biggest club competition. They should have played on Wednesday night against Colombia’s Atletico Nacional the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final. Unfortunately, everything came different and ended in a horrible and tragic crash that destroyed “the fairy-tale rise of Brazil’s Chapecoense”.

Air safety officials are still trying to figure out why the airplane crashed and right now they assume that fuel starvation was a huge factor to that crash. But is a little questionable too because the airplane was only about five miles away from the airport. Fuel starvation happens when the engines stop to run after the fuel got cut off from them. Other people say that there could have been a problem with the airplane’s electrical system.

Questions:

  1. What do you think about the crash? Did you know that soccer team? What do you think about the tragedy that happened to those 77 people on board of that machine?
  2. What do you think happened and why did the airplane crash?

My opinion:

I think that those people shouldn’t have died. They were too young and they had a great and successful future still in front of them. The whole Brazilian nation is sad about the loss of one of their most loved sports team. They started off so small and unknown, but they were still able to make their way to the top. It’s just sad that they were being stopped before they could fulfill their dream.

I don’t really know what to believe about the reason the airplane crashed because of the several different suspicions that are going on right now. I think though that it has to do something with the fuel starvation that could have been caused by a lot of things, including a leak in the fuel tank, or an iced tank, or a failure in the pumps of the fuel.

  • Excellent job Marisa!!

  • I heard that the plane crashed due to fuel starvation because the airport they were supposed to land at didn't let the plane land. I did not know about the soccer team until this event. I think it is horrible that now those people will never be seen by their families again because someone might have been coming home from a trip.

  • I agree with you. It is terrible that the bright future you already mentioned was taken away from them I wouldn't want to be in the position of the survivors, because now they have to deal with the fact, that their best friends, companions, and teammates died. They probably like you said consider them as their family. I am as confused about the reason the plane crashed as you are.

  • I think that it a terrible thing to happen, I feel bad for the people on board along with the team. I think it was the electrical, but I do find it weird that it happened 5 miles away from the airport.

  • I did know about the crash. It's very upsetting and my heart aches for those families. I hope they figure out what happened and try to prevent it from happening again. There is a ton of different things that could've gone wrong and caused that plane to crash. I just hope that it doesn't happen again

    • Like you said I hope too that something like that won't happen again and I hope that the air safety officials find out what happened so they can prevent crashes like this to ever happen again in the future.

  • I think that this is a tragic accident and I feel sorry for everyone who lost someone. I think that it was just an engine malfunction or complication and the plane went down without any warning signs.

  • I think that this is a very sad story! I always feel terrible for those involved in airplane crashes because they are completely unaware of the situation and what is happening is out of their control. I didn't know the soccer team, but I feel extremely bad for the them, their loved ones, and the survivors. I cannot imagine surviving something as horrific as that. As you said, there could be several contributing factors as to why the plane crashed. I hope the air safety officials are able to get to the bottom of this so they are able to prevent similar things like this from happening again.

    • Indeed it is very sad and tragic and like you said it must be horrible to be on a plane that's about to crash. They were totally unaware of what's happening and they couldn't do anything to prevent it from coming, everything was out of their control. I neither can't imagine surviving something like that; first of all I don't think I would want to and secondly I would feel so guilty!

  • I think it is a very sad event. I did not know the soccer team. I just think this is a very sad event and wish it could have been prevented.
