Coldplay-Beyoncé Controversy

Coldplay and Beyonce’s new song video “hymn for the weekend” is under fire. Many people in India are offended by this video and think it is hurting their culture. One person said “South Asia is only seen as desirable when we can be used as sad-looking, dark-skinned props that throw colorful powder everywhere." Another person went onto say they don’t want to be exoticized. They claim Coldplay made it seem like all they do is dance in the streets.

In the music video, the band, Coldplay, traipses around the streets of Mumbai. They sing and dance and play with little Indian children. Beyonce is portrayed as a traditional Bollywood icon, dressed in jewels and ornate clothing. Also included in the video is Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor, many Hindu priests, break dancing, Indian style dancing, and fire breathers.

----QUESTIONS----

1. What are your thoughts on this video?-

2. Do you think it is racist?

3. How did you portray India after watching this video?

4. Do you think something should be done about the video? Why or why not?

My opinion: I think there is nothing wrong with the video. I didn't think it was racist at all and personally I think everyone else is reacting to this because one person started it. I don't think anything needs to be done it's fine.

  • Again, great job!!

  • I haven't seen the video so I don't really know what to say about it. From what is being said I can see why they would think it could be racist but me personally I don't think it is racist. I don't think anything should need to be done about the video, people are just trying to draw attention to themselves and their country.

    • I agree, if you haven't seen the video it's hard to decide what to think. Very true .

  • Just a video if they want it to bother them then let them it just shows how little tolerance people have. Yes, though it could have been worst. no much different from before, but different from the video. no, because it's just a video let it be it won't kill people will it.

    • That is exactly right. It is all how they take it!

  • I think it is just a video, but people need to watch what they do. Nowadays anything could be deemed as racist. I do think it is racist because they are kind of mocking them. Not everyone from India does that. Some people celebrate their culture more than others. I don't think anything should be done because the video is already out on the internet,

    • I agree, and yes they maybe should have taken it into account that people would get offended. I see where you can find it racist but I do not agree.

  • I actually haven't seen the video, but it seems interesting. I don't think the video is being racist, it sounds like they have a variety of poeple in the video. It seems like everyone is having a good time dancing and singing, so I'm not sure why people are being so negative about it.

    • It is interesting and neither do I, I think it is a pretty video. Nothing is negative about it I agree.

  • I really like that video. Personally I don't think it is racist but people think different as we can see. I still think that India is a beautiful place to go, so I don't think different of that place. I don't think so in my opinion the video is fine in the way it is.
