Are Sweatshops Good or Bad?

There are sweatshops all over the world and they aren’t good for society. Sweatshops is a factory, most of the time, that forces their employees to work long hours with a low pay and terrible working conditions. Sweatshops were very common in the early 20th century. These sweatshops were mainly garment industries and the employees were immigrants or female workers. Sweatshops play a big role in developing countries but they do effect peoples health. Employees that worked in different sweatshops can affect their health. Sciencedirect.com states that “Stress and anxiety are pervasive mental health problems in “sweatshop” manufacturing factories, leading to depression, violence, and suicide.”

A lot of people might think that Sweatshops aren’t in the United States, but they are in United States.  Most of the sweatshops are over in Asia, South America, and a few are found over in Europe as well. Sweatshops basically say “take it or leave it” otherwise they would have to leave it up to the big garment businesses and if the bigger businesses take over prices would be higher and job availability will be a lot lower.

I think that Sweatshops should be banned because people are getting a very low pay for a LOT of working hours. Sweat shops are invading every one of their employees’ human rights. I think that if sweatshops are banned, companies or possibly more stores might have to open to the public. At this point in time these sweatshops can close even though they offer a lot of jobs because the job availability is very high due to COVID and also due to a lot of people retiring, either at a early age or just retired in general.

Sweatshops should be banned globally. Overall Sweatshops are bad for people physical and mental health. Sweatshops can lead to suicide and violence. There is only ONE good thing about sweatshops and that is it helps develops countries. Even though they offer a lot of jobs there are a lot of jobs available due to COVID and people retiring.

  • Good topic choice and well done Colton! I would like to see you list your sources.

  • I think that sweatshops should be banned because it's not fair that they are making people work long hours. The people that work long hours don't get paid enough money becuase they are work long hours.

  • I definately think that sweatshops should be banned. Just recently I found out that online stores like Shein, Mango, H&M, and Primmark are "fast fashion" which essentially is mass-producing clothing and selling them cheaply. I really like the clothes there, and they are cheap, but now that I know they are basically sweatshops, I don't want to shop there. After all, people buying from there is almost like promoting sweatshops. I think that it is a violation of human rights, and with as much money as they get, they probably have little to eat, tiny place to stay, and a low quality of living.

    • I agree. It makes me now think about where my products are coming from. In a way, those companies, Shein, Mango, H&M, and Primmark, are basically sweatshops. I feel like if people realized that I think that they would still buy products from there. Personally, I would still buy products from there because when I am shopping I wouldn't take the time to realize and think that they are from or are sweatshops.
