Ames' Campustown Shooting

At about 2 AM on February 19th a red car stopped on Welch Avenue and fired shots into a nearby crowd of people. Thankfully, there were two officers on foot nearby who returned fire on the fleeing vehicle. The suspects fled North on Welch Avenue and then West on Lincoln Way. One victim was taken to a Hospital in Ames, two more were taken to a nearby medical center, and three more were treated for bullets wounds on the scene. None of the injuries were life threatening. Officials believe the shooting is associated with a fight that took place just before at 1:30 AM. Six officers responded to the fight, they believe the individuals involved in the fight are involved in the shooting as well.  The suspects were later arrested that day. Terrion Maxfield, 20, and Desmon R. Siner, 19, are being charged with attempted murder. While Charles Smith, 20, and Travoion D. Henry, 21, are being charged with aiding and abetting attempted murder.

1. What do you think drove the suspects to commit this crime?

2. If you were an innocent bystander, what would you do if you started getting shot at?

My opinion: I understand if it had something to do with the fight that took place earlier, but firing shots on them is not the answer. You should go with a less aggressive approach. If I was an innocent bystander, I would either drop to the ground and lay as still as possible, or run for the nearest cover I could find.

  • Great job overall! Be sure to comment three different days.

  • I think that the suspects probably either did it to hurt someone they didn't necessarily liked or just to get attention. Umm, I would probably scream then cry then run and yeah i would be freaking out because like what if you die? That would be super scary.

  • I believe these people did this because they either did it for their religion or they were just crazy. I would honestly tell everyone to get down and try to get everyone to get out of there without being hurt.

  • I honestly have no idea what drove them to commit this crime, only the criminal's themselves really know why they did what they did. If I were nearby when the shootings took place I probably would've lay on the ground and not move.

  • I think the suspects attempted murder because they got beat in the fight and were mad about it. I would get as low to the ground as possible and try to flee to some sort of cover. It would depend on the location and situation.

  • I think that the fight at 1:30 AM is what caused the shooting. If I was a innocent bystander I would try to get away from the shooters as fast as possible. I would also try to call the cops.

  • I'm assuming that the fight led to unresolved feelings. These emotions were taken out on a group of people on campus. Obviously, if I was getting shot at I'd take cover and help others do the same. In general, I'd try my best to keep everyone safe and healthy.

  • I think they might have fired the shoots because of the fight earlier but that isn't the way to solve anything. If I was getting shot at I was try to move away from the shots and find cover so I don't end up getting shot at.

  • I think they lost a fight and were mad enough to try and take away the persons life. If I was getting shot at I would just hide behind something, and if there was nothing to hide behind I would jut drop and hope to god that I don't get shot.

  • I am sure people were just mad and things got out of hand. I would try to find somewhere safe to run and hide and call the cops.
