A DESPERATE MOMENT

After a long time of job searching and moving her three children from one home to another, Shanesha Taylor was for sure she had found a job that would be good enough to stabilize her family. The interview went well but it lasted longer than expected. The 35-year-old single mother felt like she had the job "in the bag." All that changed in an instant as she walked out to the parking lot and saw police around her car where she had left her two sons during her hour long job interview. An interview that was only supposed to be 15 minutes long. A woman on her lunch break had called 911 after hearing a child crying in the hot car. She was arrested on the spot and held in jail  on two counts of felony child abuse. She lost custody of her children. People who believed she shouldn't have been arrested started a fundraising campaign to cover her $9,000 bail. They raised more than $110,000 in over two months. Taylor said she left her children that were 2 years and 6 months old in the car "in desperation" after she couldn't get them into daycare that morning. (This is what she told reporters: "Do you pass up the interview that you know is going to save your family? Do you pass up the interview you know is going to give you a future?" she thought "It's a desperate moment where you decide do I provide for my children? Do I provide home, shelter, food, necessities? Or, do I stay here and care for the children?")

  • Great job! interesting and sad story.

  • I think she should of changed the interview you don't leave her 9 month old and 2 year old in the car! you just don't do that.

    • Yes, I agree with you she shouldn't of left them in there for more than a minute.

  • I think that she was busy worrying about her interview, and not thinking about her children sitting her car. Depending how young they were, it may have not been safe because they are young and do not know much. She could have brought her children inside and had them sit somewhere during her interview.

    • I also think she was to busy worrying about the interview, but this interview was the future for her family. I agree with you she shouldn't have left her kids in the car.

  • She should have had a relative or friend watch her kids until the interview was over instead of leaving them in a hot car where they could possibly die.

    • Yes I agree with you she should of thought more about the present and less about the future.

  • I think that she should of called her mom or dad or brother and sister since the babysitter didn't answer and maybe asked if they could watch her kids.

    • I agree with you she should of contacted her family

  • I think she should have just called in and said i have kids to take care of that im not gonna leave in the car.
