A billion animals have been affected by Australia's wildfires and some have the chance to go extinct. Kangaroo Island (a small island off the coast of Australia) is 1/3 of the way burned and the island is still burning. The dunnart, a mouse sized mammal, lives on Kangaroo Island and could be facing extinction. This mammal has only been detected 48 times in the last 30 years. The dunnart has a high chance of extinction along with millions of other animals. Bugs are also affected by the wildfires. Bugs are food for other small animals and are being burned alive by the thousands. Not to mention, bugs clear dead matter and pollinate plants. Wild animals are not the only animals suffering. Cattle are also being affected by the wildfires. The Australian government states, “100,000 cattle will die in the fires.” These are the worst fires Australia has ever seen.

If you could help Australia save animals which animals would you help? Cattle or wild animals?

I would help the wild animals because they have the highest chance to go extinct.

If you were the Australian government how would you try to save the animals from going extinct?

I would take at least 2 of each animal, male and female, that are threatned by the fires and have them reproduce.

  • Good story choice even though we did have tis topic last week. Your summary is good overall. I think your first question could be stronger. You didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 20 points.

  • I would choose the wild animals because they are more likely to go extinct. There is also Cattle all around. While, their isn’t most of the wild animals in places. I would try to move the animals to a safer place. Also I would try to group females with males so they could reproduce. Which will increase the population and hopefully get them away from the fires.

  • I would help the wild animals because some of those animals could be rare aniamls only found in Australia where cattle can be found in a majority of places in the world. I would try and gather at least 1 of each gender of the aniamls so they could repopulate and if possible get more then one so it would be higher chance of repopulation

  • I would prioritize protecting the environments of wild animals that are closer to extinction. I would get as many animals as possible as to keep their population up, and I would prioritize throwing water near and on their habitats.

  • I would help as many animals as I could. For me it wouldn't matter the kind of animal it was, I would help any. This is just such a sad thing and I can't imagine how it feels. I feel like burning to death would be one of the worst ways to die. As for the government, their main job is to put the citizens first. With that being said, I would make sure to help the people first and then move on to the animals. I would also try to fly in some other firefighters and people willing to help with the rescue mission. I think people need to step up and do whatever they can do.

  • Like you said i would take about 2 of each because then they could reproduce and repopulate australia when the fires go away. If there are any zoos in australia take those animals out and save them and have those wild animals reproduce most of the animals wouldnt roam around the whole continent if you let them go in one of the areas it would most likely stay in that area for a couple weeks at the least

  • I would do the wild animals. They are very majestic animals and most of them could go extinct with the fires. Yes cattle are important but we have those all around the world like kangaroos are very cool to look at but.... dont get to close.

  • I would try to move as many animals as i could starting with the most extinct to the least and move them to an safe location mabe a zoo or something. If i where the government i would try my best to isolate the fires so that they dont spread any further.

  • If I had to make the difficult choice between saving cattle or Australian wildlife, I would have to choose the wildlife as cattle are more abundant. Some of the wildlife can only live in certain places, so I would want to make sure that the animals that could go extinct easier are helped first. However, I would still try to help any other animal I could. In order to save the wildlife from extinction, I would try to safely transport the animals to a different, less dangerous place such as a nature reserve for them to be able to stay alive and not go extinct.

  • I would help any animal that I see in sight mainly the ones that are endangered. If I was the Australian government I would declare a state of emergency asking for other help from other countries, which some have already started helping. I would also use as much money legally possible to save them.
